    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involved working directly on a piece of Siemens software. I worked within a small team to fix bugs in the software, as well as adding new features and enhancements. I also worked on the testing of the software, to ensure that it was of a high standard. I followed the agile process and took part in regular sets of meetings with both my smaller and the wider team. The placement involved a combination of independent and team working.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learnt many new skills over the placement year. There was a large emphasis on learning, and so I was given many opportunities to explore and find out more about different processes and technologies. The things I learnt include industry-specific trends, and computing-related advancements. For example, I would learn about new technologies and then be able to practice applying them in my daily work. I greatly increased my confidence over the year, and my presentation skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a large amount of responsibility during the placement, much more than I was expecting! However, the responsibilities were given to me gradually, so it was not like being plunged into the deep end. Having lots of responsibilities meant that I felt like an extra member of the team rather than an employee doing less important tasks. I was given the same opportunities as permanent employees, and with that I took on the same responsibilities expected of a permanent employee. I also received lots of help and guidance with new responsibilities, and as mentioned previously, they were gradually introduced.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Throughout the year I received a lot of support. I could ask any member of my wider team for help, and in all cases I was met with a friendly, supportive response. Employees always had time to assist me, and each time they did, there was a sense that they wanted to help me grow. I also had regular sessions with my managers to help my growth and to mitigate any challenges I was facing. For the work I was doing, there was always another member of my team I could talk to for technical advice.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I really liked the company culture and atmosphere. There was a large focus on learning and self-development, and everyone was always prepared to help others. I didn't see any conflict, and at lunch times the team would eat together. We would also do other activities such as sports, which helped with teambuilding. These would be both at the office and elsewhere, such as leisure centres. Overall, it was a very friendly atmosphere and employees were always approachable.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement! It was a very good opportunity and provided me with lots of chances to improve my skills. I learnt a lot over the year, and was supported for the whole of the placement, by both my manager and the rest of the team. I learnt what it is like to be in a workplace, and what a software engineer does day-to-day. I found the work very rewarding and felt like I was contributing to a good cause.

  • 7. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Siemens
  • I would definitely apply if you have an interest in both computing and engineering. My role was mostly computing-focused, but it was nice to be working for an engineering company and have the overlap. There'll be so many opportunities over the placement, so if you do get the position, then make the most of them all! I've found it a very rewarding year, and I'm extremely glad that I made an application!
