    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The ABI has enabled me to attend training sessions which have benefitted my professional development. I have attended an external Excel beginner and intermediate course which has equipped me with the basics and more advanced Excel techniques. I have also attended courses on building resilience and assertiveness which has improved my soft skills. The ABI has been very supportive on offering and supporting colleagues on additional training. I have also improved on the following: Ability to research and analyse data and information Attention to detail and accuracy Communication skills Creative thinking Organisation Initiative Meeting deadlines Self-motivation Team work Commercial awareness Understanding of the insurance industry

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I have been given the responsibility to research monitor developments within ABI member companies and use my initiative to portray this internally to ABI staff members. I have also been given responsibility in training and interviews. I have also been responsible for the recruitment in the Future Leaders programme which has helped developed my skills in advertising, marketing and using software to release newsletters to increase awareness of the programme. As a Member Relations Assistant, I work closely with the Events Team. With our flagship events, I have been given responsibilities during the event which has helped my understanding of how events run.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I have been supported during my placement by my team both professionally and personally. I have also been supported by the wider organisation to learn about what the different parts of the organisation does. However, despite showing interest, I haven't been provided the opportunity to work with different teams even though I had requested to do so. This would have been helpful in my professional experience to be exposed to different parts of the business and when graduating.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The best part of the ABI is the people. The general atmosphere is enjoyable to work in and I have found it a great organisation to begin my professional career in. The company culture is shaped around its values of curiosity, bravery, taking ownership, being human, and appreciative. The employees at the ABI definitely work work with these values in mind and they are not just there for the sake of it. It is also a very social company culture which is ideal when moving to a new city for the placement.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have very much enjoyed my placement. I have really enjoyed the team I work within and have made some friends for life. I have appreciated the company culture and it has shown me what kind of company I would like to work in, in the future. While the work has not been related to my degree, I have enjoyed the work, but wish it was less administrative and there was more project work. I also wish there was more opportunity to work with different teams and be exposed to perhaps the more important industry work.

  • 7. Would you recommend Association of British Insurers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Association of British Insurers
  • I would advise that individuals be themselves and get stuck in with all the opportunities they are presented with, even if they are less confident or have not done it before. I would also recommend joining the different groups at the ABI as it is a way to work on different things. For example, I joined The Sports and Social Committee, Internal Comms Team and Inclusion Group which have helped me work with different people in the organisation. As my role was very administrative and not very collaborative most of the time, it is a great way to work with others on some very exciting and enjoyable projects.
