    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Every day we received talks by individuals from different parts of the bank, such as philanthropy, where they explained their role and experience in banking. There were opportunities to ask questions. Many of the sessions were interactive where we analysed case studies from acquisitions and sales and had to explain our reasoning for a financial decision (e.g. to short or long). Note this was online. We had lots of networking with peers as well as professionals from the bank.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The sessions giving an insight into banking were quite well done as it meant that we got to see from the perspective of bankers the decisions that they made, which improved my ability to reason why I would choose to e.g. sell. Also there was a session on communication styles and the different personality types of people. This taught us about how to identify individual communication styles and the best ways to work with different kids of people.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • I think that they did a good job at providing the general overview of the bank, but also going into some further depth on the unique divisions and roles that UBS offers like Philanthropy and how this interacts with the other divisions. We got to learn about the transition opportunities between roles in the bank and hear first hand account on what that transition was like from within UBS, as well as moving from another bank to UBS and starting a new role.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Generally it seems that from the interactive sessions where we got to give input, that the bankers aimed to supplement our answers and providing further questions on our justification to allow us to form well thought out answers instead of blatantly telling us that we were wrong. This created a very engaging work environment, and it was clear that analysts' opinions were valued- this is additional to the comfortability of asking questions.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thought that it was very enjoyable and that I have a much better idea of UBS's values now after having done the programme. It seems that the work atmosphere is very collaborative and engaging, and that those at the firm really enjoy their work and find it fulfilling. I thought that the presentations by the senior bankers were concise but engaging, and left ample room for questions which works well for an online format where at times it may seem hard to not have the face-to-face engagement.

  • 7. Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS
  • I got invited to the programme after an unsuccessful spring week application so I cannot speak directly on the application process of this position. However, I believed what allowed me to get fast tracked to this role from my prior application was that I did ample research on the firm and saw what niches they had, as well as good understanding of their operations. I think that having a clear idea of why investment banking is of interest to you is very important.
