  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I have worked as the Business Analyst and Operations Intern within the IBM Consulting UKI Managing Partner's Support Team during my placement year. My role has covered three key areas: supporting the NPS Programme, conducting operational tasks and organising events.

  • My role has enabled me to develop a range of skills, including presenting, communication, adaptability, problem solving and teamwork. There has been a wide variety of learning resources available to me, such as online learning courses and face-to-face educational events.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I have had the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility during my placement. My manager has allowed me to take complete ownership of specific projects and initiatives within the team and there have been other opportunities within IBM to take on further responsibilities and tasks outside of my day-to-day role too. These examples have contributed to the enhancement of my leadership skills.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My managers and wider team have provided guidance and support to myself day in and out throughout my placement. I have also had the opportunity to have several mentors that have consistently acted as a sounding board and I really valued the advice they have given me. IBM has a very supportive and appreciative culture which I have enjoyed working within.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • IBM has a very supportive and inclusive culture. Colleagues are always willing to lend and helping hand and provide guidance wherever possible. IBM has run many D&I initatives throughout my placement, including celebrations of Black History Month and Mental Health Awareness Week. There are also many communities to be a part of and socials to attend too.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement with IBM. I have worked within a fantastic team and my role has taught me a lot about what life is like when working as a consultant. I have also had the opportunity to get involved in amazing projects, such as working at the Wimbledon Championships. Overall an amazing year.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • IBM has a very well structured recruitment process and gives you clear deadlines regarding when you will hear from them. Do your research into IBM and understand that it is both a technology and a consultancy company. Ensure that you are authentic in your application and interviews as this is something managers really look for. The key skills they want within a candidate are problem solving, communication, adaptability and teamwork.
