    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The insight programme was very well structured, in that we got a comprehensive and well-rounded look into what makes DLA Piper a leading global firm. We got to hear from various trainees, associates, partners who gave us their insight into their practise areas and their journey to DLA. We also got a chance to network extensively as well as partake in ice-breakers and a hypothetical litigation trial.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt about how the intricacies that go on when conducting a litigation trial e.g research, negotiation. I really got to develop my networking skills as I was able to interact with lots of different people. I also learnt how external affairs can shape the vision of a firm and going forward what values I would want to see being embodied when considering applying to a firm that I am interested in.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture seems to be one that is forward-thinking and innovative. Where it is typical to see partners that are difficult and unapproachable, DLA seems to push a narrative that no matter what rank one may have be it partner, trainee or a paralegal, that everyone at DLA plays an equally important role. General atmosphere is one that is quite positive and embracing of young budding talent, who may be inquisitive.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I did enjoy the overall contents of what was being delivered. However, it was let down by the lack of ethnic minority representation as there was hardly any from those who spoke to us. It could just be that they did not give enough ethnic minorities the opportunity to be part of the scheme, which is a shame as it might've deterred some talented law students from ethnic minority background from wanting to apply to DLA.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • The advice I would give to others applying to DLA is to have your CV reviewed and checked over as it is a part of the application. I would also emphasise staying commercially aware as we were tested on that as part of the application. Lastly, it is a wonderful firm that has good career prospects so do apply.
