The summer internship job is an excellent opportunity and one I really enjoyed. In terms of process, I attended an induction session at the start where I found out about the firm, work and principles of the firm and work. This was followed by IT session and ultimately client assignments in the audit service line where I did some basic work in the financial statements - these being the profit and loss account and balance sheet
Yes I developed many skills. During the placement I learnt every day how to audit various accounts within the client business, usually cash, debtors, creditors and asset verification. The main skills I demonstrated were many as I needed to use the audit software to properly test these balances and submit my work to senior managers for review. The work was then checked and I developed my skills when receiving feedback to continue this testing further.
PWC is a huge global firm and the offices are corporate and obviously very important and serious, so to speak. I learnt a lot about the roles from my research when applying but also on placement, I made friends with others from different areas such as tax and consulting, who gave me insight into what they do - similarly client work, but in other areas of focus. The firm is huge and there are many roles on offer.
The culture and atmosphere at PWC throughout my placement was really good. The firm was supportive and I had assistance from managers and peers when I needed it. I was given lots of information and help before starting and the culture seemed to be warm and genuine. There is also a big Diversity and inclusion focus and this was mentioned a few times, as an important ethos at the company. I was impressed in this area.
The placement was great. The work I did every day was important and I was felt part of the team, the many teams I worked in. I barely met everyone in my department as the team is so big but that is what you expect from a big firm like this. I went home every night excited by what I had done and keen to start again and develop the next day. It was a great experience.
Yes
The tips and advice I would give would be to ask questions and try your hardest. The effort you put in and excitement and keenness you show in placement is really important, more so than anything else. I think i made a good impression as I was willing to help others out but also do whatever was needed - be it photocopying or running errands. usually I was doing key work and this helped show my importance in the placement to my team.
