    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Very welcoming insight into the sector and scope of DLA Piper, including talks from CEOs and leading professionals, practical interaction engaging in case studies working in teams, and opportunities to network during coffee breaks as well as a networking dinner. I interacted with my colleagues joining the programme as well as DLA Piper employees who were very friendly and down to earth. I am very impressed by the scheme and feel fortunate to have attended.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication skills and how to network with employees in the industry as well as my colleagues who are on different career paths. Time management skills were tested in arriving at the office on time and to the subsequent dinners etc. I also have newly developed my public speaking skills through standing up to ask questions as well as during the negotiations in the Litigation case study (Mediation).

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • Fantastic. This programme gave comprehensive (for Law and non-Law students) and detailed information about the potential clients and sectors we would work with at DLA Piper, and the external and internal factors involved. This has heightened my commercial awareness skills and also made the commercial law route seem a lot more interesting and accessible, something I am absolutely considering now- when initially I wasn't heading in this direction! All roles spoken of interested me.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very welcoming from the beginning until the end. Not only were we well looked after, company representatives were always willing to talk and answer our questions, so approachable and friendly- particularly [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and her colleagues! Those who held talks were humorous and inspiring, speaking passionately about their areas and interests. Once over, we exited for coffee breaks (which were frequent), there was a buzz of everyone talking and the conversations following were very interesting!

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the insight programme and I am extremely excited to return, applying for more talks, schemes and internships run by DLA Piper. The team made us all feel very valued and that our opportunities are endless, resonating with the firms progressive and expanding culture in taking on new opportunities. The successful individuals I met were extremely down to earth and made me more determined to make an impact with my career as they are.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • Be authentic and yourself! They are so welcoming to a wide variety of people and are interested in those that aren't the status quo! One thing they emphasised on was that you don't have to be the best of the best, they are looking for innovative ideas, a want to do the right thing and people who are keen to immerse themselves into the teams and culture. A people-based law firm which I love.
