    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Sat in two departments, corporate and disputes, for one week respectively. Shadowed associates in meetings and completed tasks which replicated trainee work.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Definitely - as someone from a non-law background, the vacation scheme was invaluable for finding out what tasks are actually done day-to-day at a law firm. I was challenged to learn skills like legal research, drafting etc. to complete the assigned work.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • The vacation scheme definitely affirmed my interest in law. HSF did a good job of making sure vac schemers spoke to people at all levels of the firm, from trainees to partners, so we could get a clear sense of how a career at the firm might develop.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • HSF lives up to its reputation of being very friendly. At no point were the vac schemers made to feel like they were pitted against each other, and there was a plethora of evening events for us to socialise in a more informal setting. Also, almost everyone I met worked on an "open door" basis and did their best to drop by and chat with the vac schemers.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • It was very enjoyable - I felt like the HSF team really designed the scheme based on what vac schemers would want to know (e.g. presentations from different teams, on HSF's approach to SQE) instead of just what we can be formally assessed on.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills
  • In the Assessment Centre, you'll more than likely be given a complex problem you don't know how to solve - try to think out loud, and show how the interviewer how you reason and work towards a solution.
