    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would highly recommend this programme to whoever is considering a career in commercial law. This innovative programme has been meticulously tailored by the Early Careers Team at DLA Piper to be an interactive, inclusive and insightful 3-day itinerary. The programme includes thought provoking, informative and ground-breaking tasks from senior employees at DLA Piper, and also interactive workshops and activities to enhance your own skills.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Out of all the insight programmes that I have participated in, this was by far the most captivating. The international nature of the firm, the wide range of practice areas the firm operates in, the entrepreneurial creative nature of the firm, and the purpose driven aspects of the firm really made DLA Piper come to life for students. The interactive aspects of the programme allowed students to enhance advocacy, negotiation, teamwork, research and analytical skills.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • DLA Piper’s co-CEO [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] highlighted in his talk how the firm has a wide range of practice areas and potential roles within the firm. This was evidenced throughout the programme by the various speakers who’s roles varied from full time pro-Bono (responsible business team) to litigation, to corporate and to entrepreneurial legal tech work. Furthermore, the Early Careers Team gave detailed explanations in respect of pathways and the firm culture.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • DLA Piper is one of the largest global law firms and is a leading force in respect of legal innovation. Despite this, the speakers and the organisers were extremely down to earth and inclusive. I think that the extensive pro-Bono work of this firm and the encouragement for entrepreneurship has resulted in a purpose-led culture. The office atmosphere was friendly- even the employees who had no involvement in the programme were keen to say hello.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • This programme was extremely fascinating from beginning to end, with exemplary speakers and practice areas. The programme also included a dinner, which was a nice opportunity to network and get to know the diverse group of people in the programme outside of the offices. The interactive nature of the workshops and also the opportunities to ask questions ensured that enthusiasm was kept throughout the programme - as people can often get tired listening to many talks.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • The Early Careers Team at DLA Piper have no academic requirements and view applications holistically. My advice would be to show best how you are as an individual whilst also ensuring you demonstrate your commercial awareness. Good luck!
