    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked in the finance division of the Glasgow office where I was responsible for compiling, adjusting and analysing data, which I incorporated into a presentation pack that was sent to management each day for review. Alongside this, project work is also part of the role, which may include enhancing existing processes by thinking outside the box, or building a new process from scratch to complete a certain task. Communication and calls with the wider team were part of each day's activities.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learned a great deal technically, through working with excel and other financial software packages to complete daily tasks. My interpersonal skills also were improved, by communicating with the wider team and beyond each day. Communication was essential to success within a team where things are constantly evolving. I learned to manage my time effectively, so to meet deadlines without feeling swamped. Beyond this, I learned a great deal about the industry as a whole.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a great deal of responsibility, as my role was a direct output of my team, just like anybody else. The work I produced was sent to and used by senior management within many other functions within the business across the continent. The work was no different to what a full time employee would carry out on a day to day basis. I was motivated by this, knowing that my work had a real purpose.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • From day one, we as interns were supported, both from our own teams and managers as well as external coordinators. There were regular HR check ups, to ensure that we didn't feel isolated or left with unanswered questions or concerns. My manager arranged a weekly catch up with me where we discussed the week's work as well as regular chat. Our intern class also arranged weekly catch ups where we could ask questions and support one another.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture at Morgan Stanley really was one of the highlights of the internship for me and many others I have spoken to since completion of my internship. Every single person I got the chance to speak to was more than happy to give me time for a chat, no matter their seniority within the firm. There are a multitude of societies and clubs within the firm where you can find people with similar hobbies and interests, no matter what those might be.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I truly loved the 3 months I got to spend at Morgan Stanley. I learned more than I would have thought possible about the inner workings of such a firm, and left feeling highly motivated to further pursue a career with the company. I was given a fantastic insight into the firm, its employees and its values. From the team I was on to the board members we got to meet virtually, the environment and experience is 10/10.
