    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role was to support the audit of the group and statutory financial statements of a large FTSE 250 manufacturing company. I analysed and performed testing on different parts of the financial statements for accuracy and compliance. Also, I understood and evaluated internal controls and exposure to external risks for each subsidiary company. In my day-to-day role, I worked with different people who assigned tasks to me, helped me when I had questions and reviewed them after completion.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • As I said, one of my responsibilities was to analyse and perform testing on different parts of the financial statements for a large company. This experience has helped me to improve my analytical, accounting and finance skills. Moreover, the fact that I was in an audit team exposed me to working with people from different positions, strengthening my teamwork and communication skills. Last but not least, I developed an understanding of Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The level of responsibility was different from task to task. For instance, I helped with some basic tasks where I was responsible for their successful outcome. On the other hand, when I worked on more senior-level tasks, I always provided updates to a senior associate. However, I believe that I got enough responsibility for these tasks. For instance, I enjoyed them more because they were challenging, and I learned more. Overall, I am happy with the level of responsibility that I had.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The level of support and guidance that I received during the internship was superb. In the beginning, I was paired with a buddy who was extremely helpful. He was happy to answer all of my questions and support me when I had issues. Also, on every task, I was paired with a graduate or a senior associate who helped me. However, my line manager was rather busy during my internship, and he could have helped me more.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was great, and I enjoyed it. Everyone was really friendly and open for the interns to ask questions. Moreover, I worked a few days in the office, so I had the chance to network with people outside my wider team. I find that helpful to understand more about the company. For instance, I managed to speak with a senior manager during a coffee chat, and she helped answer my questions. Overall, I find the culture lean without having a clear hierarchy which was great specifically as a junior employee.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the audit internship at Deloitte a lot. First, it helped me to learn more about the company and the industry. During the internship, I had the opportunity to connect with many people and expand my professional network. There were social activities organised for the intern class where I met many people from different offices in the UK. Also, the internship helped me to develop important transferable skills that will be useful during my graduate programme.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
  • It is important to do a lot of research about the company, its culture, its initiatives and what the company looks for in their employees. Also, I would advise learning more about the industry that you want to go into and following different trends and news. That will help tremendously during the application process but also if you are successful and get accepted for the role. Last, I would advise applying as early as possible since Deloitte reviews applications on a rolling basis.
