    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Day typically started with an informal team meeting, allwoing me to bond with colleagues, share the progress of my project and ask for help where needed. My days differed slightly depending on what my calendar was looking like, I often had quite a few meetings throughout the day (i.e., team meetings, 1:1 colleague meeting, town halls, enrichment activities, networking). During quiet times I'd focus on my projects, training, and any extra tasks.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Amex provides lots of opportunities and support to encourage both your personal and profressional developement. They provided MS Excel classes to all interns and confidence buiding activities/events. My close colleagues also took a personal interest in developing my leadership behaviours - which is something I told them I wanted to really work on. They will ask you what skills you'd like to develop/grow so they can provide enough support to enable that growth.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a great amount of responsibility which is something I really enjoyed because it allowed me to add value and support the progression of my team. It also gave me better insight into the type of work I'd be doing if I was in that position full time. Amex definetly gives you the opprotunity to work on real and impactful projects which is incredibly rewarding and satisfying.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Amex took an active role in providing support and guidance during my internship, this coupled with their inclusive and attractive culture (reinforced by thier colleagues) boosted the entire experience for me. I was given a graduate buddy and had regular meetings with my close colleagues, leaders, campus team and talent strategy contacts. Everyone was super approachable and friendly.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed it very much. This was my first experience within such a massive and global cooperation so I really didn't know what to expect. Despite the internship being virtual this year, it felt very natural as though we were in the office. Amex took great care in emulating the in-person office experience and that just shows how much effort they put into creating their programmes.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to American Express
  • Attend their online webinars and career events, don't be afraid to ask questions or message the campus team. Always be yourself, there is no such thing as the perfect candidate so they won't be looking for that. What they'll look for is how well you fit into their culture so make sure to show passion, eagerness and readiness to learn. Good Luck!
