    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As the media events assistant, I assisted with the coordination of both international and national car launches for invited media. I would organise elements of events, I would help the team with press kits and releases, I helped with car loans and movements. I created and organised a database with our key media's details and helped track our team progress through a company used database. I would have regular contact with not only my manager but also other members of my team, really helping me feel like a part of the team and that I could approach any of them with any concerns I might have had.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My confidence really improved through the 13 months I was with BMW, working with a team of professionals who trust you with important tasks and treat you like an integral part of the team really helped build that self-confidence. I learnt how to approach others in business and how to differ your language depending on the person you're speaking to. I learnt how to prioritise tasks efficiently and how to trust my instincts, making me more open to new opportunities.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Within my first month, I was contacting journalists and other key media and organising several international events at once. I was so surprised by the amount of responsibility that had been given to me so early on. I was also given large projects that I ran throughout the year and assisted with other large scale event projects that had a 5 week turn around. The biggest responsibility I was given during my placement was leading the coordination of the UK media launch for the facelifted MINI Hatch, MINI Convertible and MINI Electric, with 66 journalists and influencers in attendance. As part of this I built relationships with external parties and lead meetings with various stakeholders to ensure the project was managed effectively. I am so grateful for everything I was able to do in what was a very strange year for everyone and learnt so much in such a short amount of time.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My manager and team were, quite simply, incredible. Every single member of our team was so friendly and welcoming and I knew I could have contacted any one of them if I needed to. Towards the end of my year our whole team had a reshuffle which resulted in my manager changing. My first manager was the kindest and most amazing woman I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She always made it a point to ask about my personal life and check on me (not only for work purposes) and her support throughout the year was incredible. She trusted me with important projects and always gave me confidence in my own abilities. My second manager was, similarly, very kind and trusting. He regularly kept in contact with me and gave me a variety of tasks that he wanted me to start doing and gave me constant feedback on my work. Overall, it was an absolute pleasure to work with a team of passionate individuals.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Working from home for a good part of the year meant that the majority of our time spent as a team was done online. My team made it a point to have 2 calls a week that were explicitly for catching each other up on our lives and general chit chat - not a work chat. This really helped me get to know the team better and even though we weren't together in person, it was nice to talk to people. The company as a whole cares a great deal about their employees. There was lots of resources available for both personal and professional developments. There were opportunities to get involved with charity work, meet others in the company through virtual coffee meetings and we had regular updates from the CEO about how the company was doing and the future direction of the company.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I absolutely loved my placement and could not have imagined myself anywhere else. No one day was the same and you were given important tasks from the beginning. Everyone you met at the company was kind and wanted you to do well, you could ask anyone for help or to learn more about their roles. My time with the company went far too quickly and I was really sorry to see it end. I do hope to return in the future.

  • 7. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group
  • Apply early! Look into the company, they are making incredible waves with their electrification ideas and this is the future of the company so be sure to know a b it about that. Try and get some experience or volunteering in. This will help show how suitable you are for the role/company and will also be very rewarding for you. If you do get to the interview stage, and I cannot stress this enough, be yourself! Don't look at the others and start comparing yourself to them, there is a reason you got that far and your personality will be a big factor in the final decision.
