    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Each day, I attended an array of meetings on a wide range of projects the global privacy team and other related teams were involved in. I also had the opportunity to work on a vast number of projects, some having a minor role and some where I was the main person responsible for producing the deliverable. This meant I regularly reached out to different members of the team as well as other teams in different departments. Each day varied and I thoroughly enjoyed the working on the projects and seeing my work being rolled out globally across Unilever.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Leadership and and building initiative and are the two main skills I have seen develop throughout my placement with Unilever. Data protection law is an area I had minimal knowledge on prior to my internship, however in preparation and throughout my internship, I invested in an array of courses cantered around data science which I have found incredibly interesting and insightful. The breath of knowledge I now have for data protection law has also drastically increased and I am confident that this is an area of law I would like to pursue further in my future career.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given the opportunity to lead an array of projects and produce deliverables and I always had the opportunity to be involved in more if my capacity allowed for extra work. I was also provided flexibility in how I would structure and produce the deliverables in a way that could be easily digested and understood by the rest of the team. Equally, I felt comfortable enough to ask for further guidance if I felt I needed it and my line manager and fellow colleagues went out of there way to provide me with assistance and answer any questions I had.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • An incredible amount! I had weekly catch-ups with my line manager where we discussed the weekly agenda and this was a time for me to raise any concerns/ issues. I also had regular communication throughout the week with my line manager and team members and even at times where my team were incredibly busy with high priority tasks, they ensured I was briefed to understand the nature of the projects they were working on and took the time to help me understand the background knowledge.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very friendly and inclusive culture, I felt comfortable from the moment I joined. In the onboarding events I was also made aware of the different networks I could join to meet other workers that were passionate about the same issues and topics as myself. I also had some in person office time and it was great to meet everyone face-to-face. Although I was slightly nervous at first, my team made me feel incredibly comfortable and the office was grand!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I particularly loved working on multiple different projects that had a real impact on the business globally. Unilever also adapted greatly to the pandemic and adopted a hybrid form of working which meant I had the opportunity to work from home and attend the office, should I wish to do so. I would highly recommend this internship to others; the experience I have gained has been invaluable and I look forward to applying to the graduate schemes at Unilever.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
  • Ensure your application is written with care and quality and prepare thoroughly for the assessment day. It's great to have a background understanding of the company and how it has progressed throughout the years; particularly, how it has scaled into the global company it is today. Browsing the website is also recommended as this informs you of all the key facts and finally, stay up to date with any news articles Unilever appears in.
