    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • At the start of the day I usually had meetings with my teams to talk over the progress and our plans for the day. The company uses the agile methodology, which is a really good way to work. I was working on two projects side by side, my main internship project, and an API used during hackathons. I was developing code, testing it, getting it reviewed and also reviewing my coleagues work, and then releasing it.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • In the duration of the internship at capital one, I learned a lot, more than I think I would have in a year at university. Starting with soft skills, I learned teamwork, collaboration, time management and leadership. These are especially important in a remote working environment, and we had sessions dedicated specifically to these. On the technical side, I learned a lot about amazon AWS and its services. I also worked with python and swift and learnt a lot about these.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I we were given more responsibility than most companies would give (which is a good thing). The code I've developed is in production and hundreds thousands of customers use it every day. We were encouraged to take ownership of the work we're doing, and we had influence on how the final product looked like. One of the projects we were working on is used during hackathons and can be used by participants to improve their programming skills

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The mentors in the teams I worked in were extremely helpful and I always felt supported. I could ask them anything, and they were always happy to support me. Other people in the company were also eager to set up meetings and pair programming sessions to go over any issues I might have faced and helped me resolve them. My manager was amazing as well and enabled me to grow in the fields I wanted to.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Amazing culture, even remotely, and I imagine it's even better in person. Everyone is friendly and approachable and you'll feel included really quickly! There's a big grad community, with a lot of events. You can spend a good time with other people, and there's also a lot of educational events. Everyone treats other people equally, no matter how senior they are. We even had a session with the CEO of the company and she was really happy to meet us.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed it. I feel like I learned more than I would have in a year at university. I would definitely recommend applying. The time passed really quickly, and the programme team made sure we're not overworking ourselves and organised fun events to help us get to know each other with other interns and de-stress a little. It was a rewarding experience and I achieved all the goals I've set for myself.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Capital One
  • Take every opportunity you can, and talk to people! There's a lot you can achieve and if you talk to your manager they'll support you. Capital One really wants you to grow and develop new skills and it's worth seizing that opportunity. There's some good AWS courses you can take, and even pass an exam to get an official certificate from Amazon. You'll meet some of the smartest and most fun people here.
