    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • To be proactive in contacting external suppliers and colleagues within the company to enhance the quality of the work produced. To learn about the company, the markets it works in and the internal resources it has. To work closely with your team in delivering the project but also take responsibility for sections of the work. To take onboard feedback and actively seek it to improve your engineering understanding. To not seek perfection but complete work that is up to standard and follows company working practices.

    Skills

  • I've learnt additional skills in communication, how asking questions can open an avenue of knowledge you didn't know about. You don't know, what you don't know.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • We were put on a research project that could benefit the company in the future. A topic that many of the employees we spoke to were very enthusiastic about. We were given the freedom to make our own decisions as long as they could be justified, including organising site visits.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Daily team meetings with our line manager (self-organised) and weekly stream catch-ups were held. Individually assigned buddies (current graduates) who could be our first point of contact. We had the freedom to contact anyone internally and externally to progress the project. Colleagues internally were extremely helpful and happy to give up their time and knowledge to advise on the project. A variety of wellbeing and personal development programs were organised throughout the placement.

  • Everyone was passionate to work for the company and there was a freedom to express your own opinions. On a stream organised site visit, pubs were organised in the evening to meet current grads and fellow engineering interns. There were plenty of virtual events organised to introduce interns to diversity and wellbeing initiatives.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The internship made the most of the virtual side of the internship. Managing to make us feel included in the company despite not interacting in person. Impressively, the internship resolved many of my worries about working in a large company and helped me see several benefits.
