  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Participation to team meetings, performing analytical work in the lab, processing data, writing reports, sending results to project leads and discuss next steps. Presentation of work and projects to departmental meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Analytical students are exposed to a wide range activities and are offered the possibility to make significant contributions to the department. I've developed my communication (writing and speaking), time management, and team work skills. I've also developed my technique and scientific skills in multiple analytical techniques.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Analytical student are fully integrated team members and are given responsibility as soon as their are comfortable with the work they are assigned to. They are usually involved involved in more than one project at time. Activities may include method development and validation, stability studies which are critical to support projects.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The line manager is a point of contact for any concerns during the placement. Each student also has a supervisor, usually working in the same team. The supervisor ensures the student is comfortable with their work and provides guidance and support throughout the year on technical aspects but not only. All team members are always very accessible and happy to help even if their are usually always very busy.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Given the current circumstances, AZ have kept very strict rules: masks, social distancing, work from home, etc. This has made company-and team-wide social events very difficult to organise. Company events include: Power of diversity week, charity events. There is also a possibility for the team to do volunteering day.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I've felt involved and included in the team from day 1. Scientist in the department are warm welcoming and always happy to help with anything. Student are given great opportunities to make a difference in their team but also in the wider department. All the work carried out is always valued.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca
  • Make sure the company's values align to yours. The interview process consists of a technical and a values interview. Don't hesitate to talk about your previous work experiences, any uni projects or extra-curricula activities. Think about real examples. Contact any student from your university who did their placement year in the compony you are applying for.
