    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As the Risk Management Intern you get involved in a number of aspects of financial risk, looking at due diligence reviews, auditing of controls and in my case due to COVID crisis response. No two days are the same, as this role allows for a large variety of work. Some weeks your focus may be on due diligence reviews, whilst others are more audit related. The role also allows you to work across the business with key stakeholders from both Sony Europe and it's entities.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During the start of my placement year I was given Excel Level 2 training, which was paid for by Sony and has provided me with a certificate that I can reference in interviews/my CV. The company also encouraged me to work on my personal development by providing tools/support to help me improve in areas I felt I was weaker.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My own roles and responsibilities were established at the start of my placement and I took on more responsibility as the year went on. I led several projects during my placement and presented to both the Senior Management of Sony Europe and it's entities.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • At the beginning of my placement, I had a two week handover ran by the previous intern, with the support of my manager. They had prepared slide decks and a handover document explaining both my role and the finance department as a whole.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was very inclusive and supportive - you will not be treated like an Intern, you are considered a full time member of staff. The general atmosphere of the Weybridge office seemed really good, as it has a good canteen, cafe and a fun room, however we were rarely in the office due to COVID-19. My team made a effort to have weekly catch ups to chat and check in which I found really helpful in remote working.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my year-long placement at Sony! I learnt so much was treated like a full-time member of staff and no-one will ever refer to you as an intern. If you express an interest in a certain area the team will try and give you more exposure so you can get involved. I received external training and the opportunity to attend webinars and symposiums.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Sony Europe
  • Try and research Sony Europe directly, they are an electronics company! Many individuals mentioned pictures, PlayStation and music as why they are interested in working for Sony and whilst they are all good reasons, they are not the electronics business.
