My role as an engineer was to write code to fix bugs or add a new functionality. On an implementation team you deal with extending the system based on what the customer requires. In dev you fix any bugs that are found and add new system functionality that everyone can use. One a day-to-day basis I normally use SQL, C# and sometimes Oracle.
Before I started my placement I only knew the basic's. Since working at Lighthouse Systems my programming knowledge has improved greatly, and you are always learning new things.
Lighthouse like to give you a lot of responsibility straight out of training. Once you move into a team you're basically treated as a normal employee and will work on everything. They do provide you with a lot of support and whenever you get stuck their is always someone who can help.
Whenever you need help or support their is always someone who can help. When you first start at the company you are assigned a buddy and a mentor. They are there to answer any questions and give you targets and goals to achieve while on placement.
The atmosphere is quite relaxed, there's a lot of opportunities to chat to people. I have made quite a few friends at work and we hang out a lot outside of work. There's is always someone who will go for a drink with you and the work parties are really fun.
Even though COVID completely changed our experience from previous years, the placement has been really enjoyable. It's not at all what I expected, but I have made some really good friends and met a lot of interesting people.
The one thing I would recommend is to just be yourself. There's no need to get stressed over the application or interview
