    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would have a variety of tasks around the branch which would range from assisting with both the Individual banking and Corporate banking teams alongside the Account Manager Support team. These tasks could be anything from creating payments and closing accounts to meeting customers and appreciating the fundamentals of the branch's culture in these meetings. Any spare time would be spent on a variety of projects from individual ones to ones alongside other interns.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed a variety of skills involving presentation preparation and henceforth the ability to present with ease and in the best way. However, the main skills I will take from the experience will be the understanding of so many different functions and procedures within a bank and how I can implement this knowledge into my life. I've also advanced a much richer understanding of a workplace environment and the way a 9-5 office functions.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given plenty of responsibilities throughout my time at the branch, but the most effective way to gain these responsibilities was through making sure my colleagues knew I was open to learning more about their tasks, To this end I was given tasks relating to the highest profile customers in the branch and commenting on live situations in which my opinions were valued and appreciated.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a very extensive support team around me during my time at the bank. This extended from numerous member within my own branch and then dedicated mentors across other branches and head office, which included a grad mentor who was extremely helpful. All of the tasks I completed I had a group of people around me who were always able and willing to help and with an online section of instructions which could answer almost any question.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I found the culture of the bank to be extremely fascinating and peculiar. This was due to the decentralized, localized model which Handelsbanken functioned by which is much different to the other high street and competitive banks across the UK. This culture was reinforced at all levels within the bank and all members of staff I was in contact with enjoy working within this culture and thrived within it. The day-to-day atmosphere was optimistic, friendly and very welcoming.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and found it a tremendously rewarding experience. I found the experience very engaging with the projects making sure that you can always remain even in times where the jobs from colleagues slowed. Besides that the branch was a very welcoming and friendly environment which made the internship much more enjoyable and rewarding.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Handelsbanken
  • Make sure that you are aware about the culture and environment within Handelsbanken. It is not the regular high street bank - it is way more focused on the individual interactions with customers and the customer loyalty and satisfaction. This makes the branch a much preferred environment than other banks across the UK.
