    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked in the fulfilment and distribution teams solving problems within the Tesco depots. As a technology product manager at Tesco you work closely with engineering teams and your business counterparts to either improve or maintain the systems within fulfilment. You create problem statements, do user research, and collect data. You then implement solutions for these problems using the data you have collected.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Tesco is the largest private employer in the UK and this really helps to develop confidence and communication skills. On a daily basis you will interact with people who you have never met before and it forces you out of your comfort zone to present ideas and communicate with people you don't know. I have also learnt how to carry out user interviews and UX user testing.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given my own project to work on throughout the internship. I could use my time outside of this project to explore other areas of the business. This independence came with the responsibility of having to manage my time effectively and also making sure I was hitting the deadlines for my project. The project was an important problem that needed to be solved and I was given full responsibility of all aspects of it.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyone at Tesco was more than happy to help out the interns. We were all assigned line managers and graduate buddies who we had constant contact and support from. When we weren't working on our projects we could contact other people in the business in areas that we wanted to explore and they were all keen to get us involved with their teams and support us in what we wanted to learn.

Going into the office is very welcoming and friendly, people are happy to stop and chat and answer any questions without you feeling like you are wasting their time.
