Overview
The experience was set out over a a few days with a 9-5 layout. We would start with an icebreaker and a little chat at the beginning and then go on to have various sessions with multiple different people at teach first. The lessons covered all aspects of how to be a good teacher from lesson planning to engaging with students. We would do tasks in groups of students to practice the skills we learnt.
Skills
Absolutely. The experience was invaluable. I’ve learnt skills in lesson planning, how to manage a classroom, how to engage with students and so much more. I’ve developed existing skills of leadership and how to communicate effectively in the workplace. As someone who is quite shy and self conscious with presentations, teaching was a little daunting for me. After the experience I felt like I could teach with confidence and do it very well.
Business Insight
It was extremely valuable. It has helped me plan for my future career and understand the options I have and capabilities I possess to do different things.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere was extremely welcoming and supportive. During the whole experience I felt very taken care of. There was always someone if not multiple people available to talk about concerns, everyone was extremely friendly and upbeat and the structure of the experience allowed for breaks and time to talk to other participants which was great and helped me feel like I was part of a group and not alone.
Your Impressions
I absolutely loved it. It was amazing and I would do it again. I would definitely recommend it to anyone even minimally interested in teaching as it’s so good and engaging that anyone will leave with a feeling of wanting to teach, regardless of whether they went in with that feeling or not. The skills learnt are also extremely valuable and the ability to practice multiple times throughout was amazing and helped a lot.
Yes
Do it. If you’re feeling anxious or nervous you don’t need to! They support you throughout the whole process and help you achieve your potential. Even if you’re unsure about whether you want to teach or not this course is amazing and will help you understand if teaching is for you or not. If you have any concerns get in touch with the teach first team. They are so lovely and supportive!
