Summer Technology Intern Review

I am placed in a team with four other interns and we are working collaboratively to develop an application from scratch that will be used internally within the company. I have stand-ups with my team on a day-to-day basis, and I spend a few hours everyday working on the project. I also have frequent speaker series I go to, social events organised by the campus team and other events that give us an insight into the company.

Yes, I have developed a range of skills during my internship including communication and networking skills, organisation and time management skills, as well as problem solving and team working skills. I have also gained a lot of technical experience as I worked with a tech stack that I have never used before. Besides, I was able to apply my existing knowledge of software engineering in an industrial setting which has given be an insight into what a technology role at an organisation looks like.

Yes, my team was given full responsibility of our project. We were able to plan out the execution of our project on our own but we could also reach out for help/ support whenever we needed it. We updated the wider team about the progress we made as an intern team in weekly stand-ups and this motivated us to be on-track. I really enjoyed the independence we were given and the trust that our manager had in us for completing the project.

I had lots of support available during my internship, from my manager, my buddies that I was assigned and from the wider team as a whole. The HR as well was very supportive throughout my internship! Everyone was really friendly and always willing to help even beyond their working hours. The wider team was very quick at responding to any questions I had and made sure to check-up on me weekly, if there was anything else I needed help with.

I was really impressed by the people-focused company culture in place. The culture of giving and receiving feedback, the diversity and inclusion initiatives, the blue box values, the number of social events even in a virtual setting as well as the charity initiatives that I also had an opportunity to get involved in; are just a few of things that stood out to me the most! It was also very easy to network your way within the organisation and everyone was always willing to have a chat.

I absolutely loved the internship experience. The project that I was working on was very intellectually simulating. The wider team was very collaborative and always willing to support me throughout my time at the internship. The campus team put in a tremendous amount of effort in organising this internship and their efforts were evident in the amazing social events in-place as well as the range of speaker-series that presented me with career development and growth opportunities.

It was the flexibility of the internship that inspired me to apply. I would say if you are planning to apply, be open to having honest and frank conversations with the interviewer about your interests and where you see yourself i.e. if you have a preference of business units etc. The internship is also your opportunity to get to know the company more and you can network your way within the company to find out about other roles that might interest you.
