I spent 2 weeks in the M&A and Corporate Finance department. The tasks varied from day-to-day. There were insolvency checks, attendance notes, proofing documents, Document Lists mark-up changes, company research notes and drafting.
I have learnt how to draft attendance notes and Stok Transfer Forms. I have improved my proof-reading, drafting and research skills, as well as softer skills such as communication, presentation, note-taking and attention to detail.
People across all the firm's departments were very open, forthcoming and informative about the business and what is covered in each area. I understood that there are multiple opportunities for roles within the firm for aspiring solicitors and others.
Incredibly friendly. The reputation for BCLP's friendly, affable and non-hierarchical culture are all true. I was made to feel very at home within my department and was welcomed warmly into conversations across other departments. I feel like I have been at the firm for months because of the warm reception that I received on arrival and have continued to receive throughout the scheme.
I greatly enjoyed the insight. It is a unique chance to gain experience and insight into the firm and its values. I was able to identify whether the firm would be a good fit for me and whether I thought I would be happy here. I was able to dispel inaccurate pre-conceived ideas about life in private practice and gain real experience in a department in which I had very little experience.
Yes
Be yourself. There is no one-size-fits-all approach at BCLP and they are looking for individuals who align with their values and will continue to project the culture and the values of the firm. Be well prepared, do your research and then be yourself.
