    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • This week I have completed a variety of tasks. I have undertaken a case review where I summarised changes to the law surrounding the SAAMCO principle I did this by reading the judges’ decision and comparing it to other case law and highlighted the main areas of departure. I have also completed a research task looking into the duty to present material facts to an insurer. I enjoyed this task as I was able to apply my research to a current case and really see how my research would be used in practice. I did this by accessing legal databases and cases and comparing different judgements and directions. I have also undertaken diarising tasks where I set up event notifications for court deadlines. I have drafted a letter to a client with regards to the definition of a claim and at what point notification of a claim has been made. I did this by using legal databases to define the term claim and then looked at case law and academic literature to give explanations of the definitions in practice. I have researched cases using westlaw on construction fire deficiencies and how the area of fit for purpose warranties has evolved in recent years.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The key skill I have learned and developed this week is virtual networking. Having the confidence to reach out to my supervisors and the people working around me online has been a learning curve and something I have not previously had to do. In a virtual world this is a skill that will really help me throughout my legal career. I have also developed my legal research skills and been able to analyze cases in a way very different to what I have previously done for my degree. This is also a key skill to have as case and legislation analysis is often at the heart of the work done by lawyers.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • Very easy to talk to everyone in the office and virtually. gained a great insight from other trainees and supervisors about what their role is in the firm and what they do on a daily basis. From the beginning I knew what the role would entail and if I were to progress to a training contact what this would mean as well. It has been really easy to get in touch with graduate recruitment and other members of the frim to talk about their work

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Although I have done most of the ~scheme virtually, we have been able to have online social events. the firm have been great at providing resources for these events and thinking of fun things to do on these events. we have been able to go to the office as well and this has meant being able to socialise and go out for lunch with my team which was a great way to o get to know them and what it is like working at the firm.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I have really enjoyed the insight as I have had the chance to be involved in a variety of work which has differed day to day. I have been able to be in charge of my own time and decide what tasks to prioritise. The best part of the insight is the ability to network with new people and get to know lots of people in the same position as me and get a real feel for the work done at clydes.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Clyde & Co LLP
  • I would tell a friend to make sure they really do their research in order to secure a placemat. and to remember that the scheme is as much about you choosing the firm as it is the firm choosing you. make the most of talking to everyone that you can and say yes to every opportunity. I would also tell them to manage their own time and don't be afraid to communicate exactly what you are doing and how much time you have to your supervisors.
