Generally we were set tasks by our supervisors or trainee buddies to work on independently. We also had daily opportunities to attend department and client meetings. We spoke to people outside of our department too, either through networking events or by getting in touch proactively. The vac scheme included a few fun socials as well!
I learnt a lot of soft skills on the scheme - how to interact professionally yet informally with partners in the firm, how to behave with clients, how to communicate clearly over zoom. I also learnt research and presentation skills. The scheme also improved my time management skills as I had to juggle and prioritise different tasks. My teamwork skills were strengthened on the scheme while working on our group presentation.
I definitely gained a better understanding of the firm as a business - we had to do a client pitch which helped me consider pricing and strategy. The lunch with the management committee also provided an insight into the business side. I was already quite well-informed about potential roles but we also found out more about how the training works.
The general atmosphere was great. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which was helped by some fun social events. Partners were approachable and easy to talk to.
I really enjoyed this vacation scheme! There was a good balance of work and fun socialising opportunities. I also felt that our time was busy but not too jam-packed, which was helped by the fact that it was three weeks long.

It's hard to come up with original advice but I would say to research the firm thoroughly so you have some tailored bits of info in your application. Try to meet people from the firm at open days, law fairs or online events so you get a good sense of the culture. Practice watson glasers too!
