    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role mainly had me sitting at my computer, working from home and coding in python. I have been given my own project from day one and been building it from POC to productionisation over the past year. I’ve developed my understanding of other languages like SQL and Spark along with learning a lot about how the business runs and how to function as a productive member of a large scale business.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The new skills I learnt mainly focus on soft skills, like being able to communicate and resolve issues through email and collaboration on projects with version control and regular meetings. But I also learnt new skills in using cloud computing, SQL and Apache Spark. All of which will be fantastic for the CV.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • For my placement I was given an entire project to lead, the sole responsibility of which was on me. I was treated like a full and active member of the team from day one. From the nitty gritty coding to presenting my work all around the business through different reviews and forums. We would often get together to decide an action and I would get full autonomy to act on that in my own way.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The support within the team has been fantastic. If I have ever needed anything, I always knew I could reach out to the team as whole or individuals within the team and they will make time to help me out.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very inclusive, we have members who are actively encouraging inclusion and diversity through committees and presentations all the time. I was even able to give a talk in the inclusion and diversity meetings about my own culture and others have as well. There are constant social events along with a tea break every day so people can sit and have a coffee and chat over teams.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have really enjoyed it, I’ve been challenged but never over-worked or given impossible tasks. The expectations of me have always seemed spot on and I feel that I’ve managed to meet them well. I would say that the placement has exceeded my expectations and I would absolutely return if I could.

  • 7. Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace
  • The interview process can seem scary because of the video interviews but you just have to do it, it’s fully worth it. But try to speak clearly and wear smart clothes for the video. Other than that, the isn’t really anything I wish I knew, everything was clearly set out for me to enter the business smoothly.
