    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • There were talks by a wide range of partners each day regarding different elements of working at the firm, such as its CSR, well-being practices, and opportunities. A large part of the week was spent completing the group assignment which was enjoyable and managed well. Office specific sessions allowed you to meet and network with other people who had applied to the same office. It also allowed you to meet the office managing partner.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Developed team-working and leadership skills through the group exercise. Presentation skills developed as well. Knowledge of legal work and the firm itself was a big part of the learning experience. Networking skills were developed, particularly in a virtual environment.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • The experience was great. Everyone was really friendly and the speakers really helped to grasp what the business was like. Everyone was different but the values of the firm were really put forward. The one shame is the lack of structure for questions during the speaker sessions. It felt like a few people got to ask a lot of questions throughout the week, whereas some struggled to get chosen to ask.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone was really friendly and welcoming. People were really keen to celebrate differences and to help interns get a good experience of the firm. The trainee buddies were really helpful in getting ready for the experience and spoke well of the experience they've had with the business so far, in environments where they could speak openly. It seems like people work really hard but get along well doing it.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I loved the insight and felt the business managed the virtual element pretty well. It felt like a really good opportunity to get to know the firm and the involvement of the partners made that experience feel more genuine. The group exercise was really fun, and overall the assessment elements were not made to feel too stressful. They gave us a really genuine chance to show our best abilities.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • The more relaxed you can feel during the assessment process the better you will probably do. The firm and the partners seem to really enjoy the recruitment, so there is no need to worry. I would especially reccomend advising the recruitment team of any adjustments you need. I suffer from tinnitus and one of the recruitment team called me a week before the assessment day to talk it through with me, which was lovely.
