    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assisting the internal support team on processes and issues. Attending technical meetings, working on assigned projects which usually relates to developing user interfaces, installing/testing new technology and occasionally shadowing team members on their projects. Also creating newsletters on a regular basis.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Was provided some brief internal training relating to processes which the team I'm in follows due to the pandemic and remote working otherwise would have been done more in depth in the office. Developed existing programming knowledge through some projects requiring the use of these skills. Slightly improved on soft skills such as team work and public speaking through presentation activities.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Was given responsibility mostly on simple non-critical tasks and usually given projects that only involved me and which didn't really have a deadline. Although, I shadowed my team members on important projects by listening in to the related meetings. Overall I don't feel like I made much of an impact but remote working may have been one of the factors of this.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Manager and internal team were friendly and approachable. They were always supportive and considerate on personal issues/circumstances. Communication needs improvement, I sometimes find that my requests or questions relating to work have a slow response and I would usually need to follow up a few times. Again, this could be due to remote working this year but the fact that I experienced this with other departments - it may be part of the company culture

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • There were virtual socials, some extra voluntary opportunities such as becoming an intern ambassador as well as stretch projects to take part in. I wasn't able to get a full understanding of the culture due to the pandemic and building relationships within the team and others in the company was difficult.

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really appreciate the creative freedom available in my role and my manager who's always open to hearing my ideas on how to improve processes. My experience was good in the sense that I did take part in a wide variety of tasks that were stress-free and improved on soft skills but it could've been better if I was given more responsibility that had a deeper impact.
