    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Over the 3 days I completed a business development project which I presented to a training principal and my mentor on the final day. This was self directed. Additionally, I took part in workshops and presentations which gave an insight into the different sectors and the work of a trainee. Q&As with trainees and partners helped to get a real understanding of the firm experience. There were also group tasks and mini assignments to actively encourage a trainee-like experience.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I certainly developed my networking and social skills as there were opportunities to meet a range of individuals from the firm. I also developed my communication and presentation skills when presenting my project, as well as my confidence and self-direction skills. Social skills are a huge asset at Shoosmiths as the firms is people and relationship based, meaning these were key throughout the placement. Further, time management skills were key to keep on top of the activities in a short period of time.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • This is the best way to understand what is required as a Shoosmiths’ solicitor, with a focus on clients and building lasting relationships. It was clear throughout that this is key to succeed in the firm. Further, talks from the different sectors and with trainees gave a full insight as to the work available, as well as showing different industries that individuals may not have previously been aware of. The rundown of different sectors was a great overview of the general work the firm does.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture was just as the firm describes - open and based on people and relationships. Everyone was very welcoming and encouraged questions and collaboration, and the senior lawyers were keen to encourage further communication after the placement. Whilst it was online, everyone was very attentive to our needs and helpful with our queries, genuinely wanting us to make the most of the three days. There was a genuine care for interns to have a good experience.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed the scheme - from being able to interact with my cohort, to finding out more about the industries, to being heard and respected by senior members. The size of the cohort was perfect to feel like there were a good mix of people without being too overwhelming. The only downside was the online nature of the placement but ultimately this cannot be helped - still everyone was interacting and able to get involved. Shoosmiths creates a very positive environment.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Shoosmiths
  • Try to be yourself as the firm values your personal experiences and commercial knowledge. As the core of the firm is clients and relationships you need to show that you use rest and how clients need to be valued and why this is important in the long run, as well as what the benefits of this are. A lack of legal experience should not put you off as the firm values real job experiences above all.
