    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My day involves looking at the team JIRA board and ServiceNow account and monitoring for new tickets. I would pick up nay new tickets and progress them either by resolving the issue if I have previously encountered it before or have a call with the user who reported the issue and then work with the development teams to help resolve the issue. I have multiple team meetings and have knowledge transfer sessions so everyone on the team has the same knowledge so anyone can work on the new tickets.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The internship has helped me improve my communication skills by both having to communicate effectively within my team by also being able to listen to the users as they explained what the issue they were encountering with the app was. I have developed my time management skills though working with different teams in different time zones across the world. I have learnt how to investigate and troubleshoot different issue on a range of apps. I have also learnt a lot about broadcasting and how the apps I support are used by the business when creating and broadcasting shows.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility from the start of my placement. I am on PagerDuty and I am responsible for managing and helping to resolve critical issues when they are raised. I have had the responsibility to perform upgrades to apps and to restart services. I take ownership of new tickets and carry out any further tasks after the ticket is resolved. I have also taken ownership of small projects for the different teams I have worked with.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support during the first couple of months of my placement in teaching me the different tools used by the team. I have continuously been learning new app through my placement. I have so far learnt over thirty apps which I can know support. Through the intern program I have also received support on how to develop my soft skills. My colleagues have also provided me support by mentoring me and giving me guidance about the world of work and future careers.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is fantastic. It encourages inclusivity and diversity. There have been multiple events ran by the company to promote mental health and to encourage our learning and development. The technology team have hosted online social events. Through the intern program I have had the opportunity to be involved with the Moment Makers charity scheme which allowed us to help run events to help raise money for Medicinema. The company has also hosted events to keep everyone active during lockdown.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • This placement exceeded all of my expectations. I have had a fantastic opportunity to work on a wide variety of apps which range from news applications, booking systems and live broadcast and scheduling systems. Everyone I have worked with have been helpful and have only wanted the best for me. I also had the opportunity to work with both the EMEA team and the US team. It has allowed me to work with and talk to people around the world which I would have never thought to be possible.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to The Walt Disney Company
  • Make sure that you have read through and checked your cover letter and that it relates to the job that you are applying for. You do not have to worry about the interview as everyone is extremely nice. You have to go into the job with an open mind and be willing to learn as much as possible and try to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. I was inspired to join Disney as it is one of the most famous companies in the world and it has created some of my favorite movies and TV shows.
