    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Designing, planning, and carrying out a range of different experiments. Researching past work done in my field . Meetings with other associates to aid research and socialise my own findings. My time is split roughly 60 % carrying out experiments and 40% planning those experiments, writing up findings etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to roast coffee on a variety of different coffee roasters. I have also been trained on a variety of pieces of analytical equipment. My presentation skills and confidence have improved dramatically. I have developed my skills around project planning and management, seeing a significant difference between now and the beginning of the placement. My confidence and knowledge around designing experiments has improved over the course of the year.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. I was surprised at the beginning of my placement as to the amount of responsibility the company was giving to a new intern. I was given a new project and was largely left up to my own devices to plan and execute this. Guidance and support was however there if needed. I took that responsibility in my stride and felt I have delivered for the company.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance throughout the year. There was always someone available to talk problems and issues with. I was part of a close knit team who often would help each other out on different projects lending a hand in the lab, or suggestions for directions to take a project

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 4/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Having not experienced many other companies like this it is hard for me to compare. However I would say the general atmosphere is on the whole quite relaxed. Having it been a year of lockdown's it has been harder than most other years to get a full picture of the culture. There are plenty of diversity and inclusion events however.
