    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • As an entire intern cohort, we had a firmwide introduction into the firm where we learned about the different divisions that make up Goldman Sachs. We then split up into our various specific divisions for the rest of the two weeks to learn about them in more detail. We also had financial training on accountancy fundamentals and different valuation methods used in investment banking. There were various case studies that we worked on in groups and then gave presentations on, alongside hearing various talks from senior people in the firm.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have certainly developed my time management skills as we had to balance working on the case studies and networking with various people from the firm. We were given a lot of independence as interns so we were not given people to network with specifically and I enjoyed this as it helped me grow professionally as a person. I also developed my teamwork skills especially in a financial context through working on our case studies.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • The first day was our main opportunity to learn about the different divisions at Goldman Sachs. They did not go into too much depth into the different divisions because we had applied to our preferred division but a brief overview of them and the different ways they interact with each other was given. The firmwide orientation was a nice opportunity to make us aware of the different divisions within investment banking and it was a good experience on the first day.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture at Goldman Sachs is very client and people-driven. They are all about putting their clients first and nurturing a supportive environment for their people and it shows in the people you talk to at the firm. Everyone was so willing to help you if you reached out to them, even given their very busy schedules. The general atmosphere was great. Hearing from very senior speakers seemed daunting but they were very incredibly friendly.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed the spring programme so much more than I thought I would. I loved how we were treated as analysts and during your time on the programme, you actually felt you were a Goldman Sachs employee. I particularly enjoyed the financial training we received. Not many other spring programmes would offer this and it added to the wealth of information that we learned about the investment banking industry. Everyone we met was so kind and helpful. I would encourage everyone to apply as it was truly an incredible experience!

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Goldman Sachs Group
  • Firstly, I would ensure your CV is prepared to the best of your ability. Make sure it shows off your best experiences - even if it is not finance related, try to extract key skills that you gain from them that relates to investment banking. There is a 300-word cover letter which can be difficult because the average cover letter is around 500-550 words. This forces you to be concise so make sure to answer the main why Goldman, why the role and why you questions. For the video interview, make sure you dress smartly and look into your webcam when speaking.
