    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The two days consisted various presentations delivered by different employees of the firm on topics including but not limited to Digital Transformation, Technical Skills and Applications Tips. There were also various interactive sessions and workshops covering subjects like Corporate Negotiation, Alternative Dispute Resolution, insights into our pro bono work, and a careers fair where we could listen to different trainees, associates and partners on their experiences within a given practice area. We also spent an afternoon shadowing a trainee, followed by an evening social event.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I had an opportunity to gain several skills during this first year insight scheme. In terms of industry-specific skills, I was able to develop my understanding of what a career in commercial law would entail and what are the key attributes that big City law firms look for in future trainee solicitors. I was also able to develop my communication and teamwork skills as I participated within a group of 8 in an Alternative Dispute Resolution workshop.

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was very supportive and friendly. It was great to see how collaborative everyone was not just during the formal presentation and sessions but also during the evening social event where we spent our time networking with different employees of the firm whilst making chocolates in small breakout rooms on Zoom. This first year scheme gave me a good feel for the culture of the firm, what it would be like if I worked here and the value the firm places on Diversity and Inclusion.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills
  • I would say research thoroughly into the firm, ie know what makes Herbert Smith Freehills stand out in comparison with other firms. I would also recommend all those applying to proofread their application multiple times before submitting it as one of the main reasons the Graduate Recruitment Team rejects candidates is because of grammatical and spelling errors. In terms of the psychometric test, I would encourage all those applying to practice multiple times before sitting the actual test.
