    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The legal intern works closely with both the commercial and regulatory lawyers, supporting them with the work they do. They also work with the head of legal intermittently, but their day to day correspondence and tasks will usually come from the other members of the team. Day to day responsibilities include working on the contract management system, drafting and reviewing Terms and Conditions and other documents, legal research and being involved in the compliance training of all BSH employees. Every day is different and the role also involves working on projects with other teams.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my placement I have developed professional skills which will assist me in my future career. This includes communication skills and knowing the different ways to communicate with different individuals, organisation skills and time management. As well as this, I have had the opportunity to attend webinars on different legal topics, as well as non legal ones, which has allowed me to develop knowledge on topics which I have not learnt about at university. It has been really interesting to see how the theory I have learnt at university is applied in an in-house legal role.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given responsibility from quite early on in my placement and was able to complete work individually and then get feedback from my team. I was really glad that my skills were utilised well and that I was able to develop these skills through the responsibility I was given.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My team and others in the company have been really supportive in ensuring that I feel part of the team and am comfortable in the work I am doing. I have had a daily catch up with two members of the legal team, as well as a weekly catch up with the whole team, in the morning which is a great way to start the day and, I think, shows the caring culture of the team.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Joining BSH during the pandemic has been challenging due to having to work from home and therefore not getting the same contact I would have in normal times. Despite this, everyone has a ‘doors always open’ (or skype messages) mindset and this is really encouraging knowing I am able to reach out to different members of the company whenever I need to. Everyone I have spoken to has been very welcoming and always keen to help where they can.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my placement and the opportunities it has given me. I have really developed as a person during this time and will definitely use the skills I have gained in my future career. It has been a shame that we haven't been able to be in the office like normal times due to the pandemic as that would have allowed the intern community to really bond but it has still been a really great experience.
