The First Year Workshop was a two day scheme where we were immersed into a range of activities and seminars to improve our understanding of Herbert Smith Freehills and of commercial law. There were networking sessions with various practice areas, as well as with trainees, associates and partners. We got an insight into the work that is undertaken at the firm and were able to ask questions. There was also a chocolate making social which was a lot of fun!
I learnt and developed many skills during my time on the Herbert Smith Freehills First Year Workshop. Firstly, I was able to develop my teamwork skills as I had to work with other students to discuss a negotiation case and how we would go about handling it for our imaginary client, before arguing this with the opposing side. Additionally, I developed my communication and personal skills as I had to talk to several people over the course of the two days.
It was great learning and understanding all about the business and potential roles available at the Herbert Smith Freehills First Year Workshop. There were plenty of opportunities to hear from various employees, from trainee level, associates and also partners at the firm. This allowed me to learn about career progression at Herbert Smith Freehills and the different opportunities that will be available to me as a graduate. Overall, it was very insightful for me as a student.
The company culture and general atmosphere at Herbert Smith Freehills was very friendly and approachable. Despite being an extremely prestigious firm in the UK and worldwide, Herbert Smith Freehills employees are very friendly and were happy to answer any of our questions that we had. Not only did I feel very comfortable sending questions in but I felt encouraged to, as the fee earners made it very clear that they were there to help us and to support us.
I really enjoyed the First Year Workshop at Herbert Smith Freehills. The event allowed me to meet so many new people and to gain an exclusive insight into the firm and into commercial law more generally. I was fully immersed into a day in the life of a lawyer and there were several opportunities for me to learn about what I can do to boost my application further to secure vacation schemes in the future.
One tip that I would give to other people applying to Herbert Smith Freehills is to research the firm. Commercial law is very competitive, especially in London and it is important to ensure that you have read extensively about the firm. I would also advise other people to be themselves! The firm is looking to hire people that fit into their culture, so it is important to show them what you character is truly like.
