    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The First Year Workshop was a two day scheme where we were immersed into a range of activities and seminars to improve our understanding of Herbert Smith Freehills and of commercial law. There were networking sessions with various practice areas, as well as with trainees, associates and partners. We got an insight into the work that is undertaken at the firm and were able to ask questions. There was also a chocolate making social which was a lot of fun!

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt and developed many skills during my time on the Herbert Smith Freehills First Year Workshop. Firstly, I was able to develop my teamwork skills as I had to work with other students to discuss a negotiation case and how we would go about handling it for our imaginary client, before arguing this with the opposing side. Additionally, I developed my communication and personal skills as I had to talk to several people over the course of the two days.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills
  • One tip that I would give to other people applying to Herbert Smith Freehills is to research the firm. Commercial law is very competitive, especially in London and it is important to ensure that you have read extensively about the firm. I would also advise other people to be themselves! The firm is looking to hire people that fit into their culture, so it is important to show them what you character is truly like.
