    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role consisted of supporting the Senior Customer Success Account Managers with their primary account. I was able to shadow their customer meetings to see what sort of engagements and questions they were asking and then I would support with tasks such as data collection and presentation for the wider team. I was then able to work on a newsletter project that was to be published to both the Microsoft account team but also the customer team. This gave them high visibility about what Microsoft initiatives were happening.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Considering I have engaged in this placement year in a virtual setting I have still been able to improve and learn new skills. One key skill that I have developed is my communication skills as most people I have spoken to has been online. Communication skills are vital during a period like this because we haven't had the needed face-to-face interaction. Another skill that I have developed is coming out of my comfort zone. Working in a organisation like Microsoft and from home, I have been presented with new opportunities that I have pushed me to speak to new people around the company.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes! I have been given loads of responsibility via my core role, my stretch project and my work on the intern committee. For example, on my stretch project (an extra activity that each intern must engage in) I have had the opportunity to demonstrate Microsoft products and services to thousands of people from companies such as David Lloyds, BT, NHS Wales and Unison.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received support and guidance during placement from both my manager, mentor and working colleagues. They were all very happy to support and guide me on my Microsoft journey. The Microsoft HR team have been quite useful as they offered weekly office hours were interns could drop in and share any concerns, personal or professional to receive guidance. I found myself using this service a couple times and it was helpful.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture at Microsoft is very inclusive! They always want to make sure all voices and opinions have been shared. The company are always leading events around their Employee Resource Groups - heavily advertising it for all to join and to learn more. The general atmosphere in the company is one where they truly care! All if not most people that I have spoken to have been genuinely happy to help support and guide me on my intern experience.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Considering my placement was virtual, I have really enjoyed it and would highly recommend all first and second year students at university to engage and apply for a placement/internship. Although I have not met any of my colleagues and or fellow intern cohort, I still feel like we have all been able to create a warm family atmosphere which has helped to make the year even more smooth running.

  • 7. Would you recommend Microsoft to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Microsoft
  • Be your authentic self! Microsoft will really see your best skills and attributes and place you in the perfect role! It may seem scary applying for such a big technology company and you may not know all information but they really want you to be a learn it all and not a know it all. So if you're willing to learn and improve constantly - you will be absolutely fine! All the notes that I had prepared for my assessment centre, I did not use because they don't want to see what you know about the company. They want to know how you as an individual can insert yourself, think on the spot, communicate and work well with others.
