    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The insight week was incredibly valuable. I learnt so much about Mace Ltd and the construction industry. As well as hearing from lots of Mace employees about a range of projects they are working in and their career paths, we had a virtual tour of a big construction site and we also had workshops on assessment centres and CV writing. The week solidified my desire to pursue a career in construction management and I hope to be able to get onto the apprenticeship scheme at Mace Ltd.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Due to Covid-19 the Careers in Construction week was virtual. Despite this, I was still made to feel valued during the whole week. I was encouraged to ask lots of questions and there were lots of staff available to help and to provide further information if I needed it. After the careers in construction week I was invited to discuss my experiences and to get feedback on my performance which made me feel like I was valued.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Due to the fact that this year the careers in construction week was virtual, we weren’t sent to teams in Mace to undertake specific tasks. Instead the format consisted of presentations, tours, workshops, and other elements. The week was so well organised that I felt like I had excellent support and guidance throughout. We were provided with information in advance so I knew what to expect and if I had any questions, the organisers were really helpful.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The virtual careers in construction week was invaluable in assisting me in my job and university applications because I was given the opportunity to have a mock interview, for someone to review my CV and to take part in assessment centre workshops. After the virtual careers in construction week I was invited to a meeting where I was able to get verbal feedback on all of the elements- this is something that really impressed me and helped me to improve.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The virtual careers in construction week was very well structured. We were provided with a programme in advance so we knew exactly what to expect and how the different days would be organised. There was a large range of activities and each had a good amount of time available so that no activity felt rushed. Everything seemed to be very well organised. We were also provided with handout pages to take notes which was really helpful.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The organisers of the virtual careers in construction week did everything they could to make the week as valuable as possible despite the fact that it was all done over zoom. There was a range of activities including talks, workshops, virtual tours, breakout sessions and more and the variety helped to keep the week engaging. We heard from lots of different Mace employees about their insights and you could tell how enthusiastic they were about their jobs which was really inspiring.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The virtual careers in construction week was just a week long and due to Covid-19 it was all undertaken on zoom. Despite this the company invested a huge amount of time to organise the week, to invite a range of employees to speak to us about their experiences and their career paths and we were also invited to workshops on interview techniques, CV writing, assessment centre sessions and other sessions to develop our personal skills.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I definitely ended the virtual careers in construction week with a thorough understanding of what it would be like to have a full time role at Mace Ltd. This is because we heard from a range of employees from all the different areas of work within Mace Ltd. We were also told about a variety of interesting construction projects and we were told how we could get to different positions within the company dependent on the skills we had.

  • The week helped me to understand the company culture. We went over the key values of the company which really resonated with me. All of the people that spoke to us were incredibly enthusiastic and loyal to Mace Ltd which really struck a chord with me. I could tell that Mace was a company that supports and develops its staff. • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The content was incredibly helpful in helping me to decide on my future career path. I already knew I wanted to pursue a career in construction management but it was really helpful to hear about other careers such as cost consultancy and planning too. It was also helpful to hear about the opportunities to work on international projects which is definitely something that I would like to pursue if I get the opportunity. It was invaluable to hear about the different career paths the existing employees had taken to get to the roles they are doing today.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We weren’t paid and reimbursed because the week had to be undertaken virtually.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • We heard from a variety of people who worked across different disciplines. We were also given lots of opportunities to talk to the other people who were taking part in the event. This would have been better if we had been able to attend the week in person but due to COVID-19 this was not possible. Despite this the event was organised to maximise the opportunity to meet as many people as possible over zoom presentations and workshops.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • We were told about the many social opportunities involved which was really great to hear about.

  • I would definitely recommend the careers in construction week to anyone who is interested in Mace Ltd or anyone who is interested in a career in construction. It was incredibly interesting, varied and I’m so pleased I was given the opportunity to take part. I hope that I will be successful in my application to join the project management degree apprenticeship scheme at Mace Ltd. The careers in construction week definitely helped me in making this decision.
