    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and all the challenges we were set. On top of the professional development, of hard and technical skills, there was ample character development with plenty of soft skills learned. The style of the internship allowed us to develop at our own pace and in a supportive environement. It then allowed us to utilise the new skills developed and put them into practice on exciting projects and then presenting our results and findings to higher ups.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout the whole of my internship I felt valued by not only my colleagues on mine and other teams, but also across members of the whole organisation. This varied from senior managers, to individuals I only had one or two encounters with. It is clear to see that J.P. Morgan values their interns and grads; and this was reinforced when we were told that we were the pipeline of new talent for the company and thus valued by all teams and managers.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I felt that the support and guidance I was provided was excellent. Not only because all the individuals providing it were very talented and supportive, but also becuase of the multiple levels of support and guidance. From our mentors to our managers and project advisors, we had many different channels to fall back on and ask for guidance. This multi-channel approach I think worked excellently and allowed for much independence, with the knowledge that there was always someone you could go to for help.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was never a slow day. The internship - albeit being shortened - still had a nice introduction to it, which ramped up our workload and responsibilities. Although there were sometimes days that you would be non-stop working, emailing and jumping between calls, this non-stop work life was fun and eye opening. It allowed great insight into the world of work and importantly taught great lessons in how to manage your time efficiently and how to get a good balance.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Due to the nature of our internship, we were not working on direct business related projects. However, this allowed us to take on a charitable project that was both rewarding and a brand new experience for many of us. This, tied in with our technical challenge allowed many opportunities for responsibility. From taking lead in our teams, to going off and doing independent work outside of the resources we were given - we were allowed full access to the wider network of employees to help network and develop our projects.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Due to the wide range of skills that I developed in my time at the firm, there will be many aspects that will continue to help me in my final year of my degree. I mean this in both the hard and soft skills sense. From time management and new techniques of working, to simpler things like communication and relationship building. All in all, I came away with a wide bank of new skills learned that I can apply to many aspects of my life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Although we were not allowed in the office, due to the pandemic, the overall atmosphere created was surprisingly good. The recruitment team put on many events that brought us together and the wider community of employees as the firm all welcomed our presence, elbeit virtually. Overall, it was a rewarding experience in times of isoaltion that provided for great network building and forming long lasting relationships that I look forward to fostering when I return.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall organisation of the internship was excellent. Especially when you consider the last minute changes they had to implement in light of a global pandemic, the recruitment team managed to put on a brand new programme that offered rewarding experiences and helped all of us grow as individuals. I will not forget my experiences working on some very technical projects, or helping a charity improve their processes and ultimately make an impact for the better. The many events laid on as well helped too!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I cannot stress enough how much the firm invests in new talent. There is a massive emphasis on training and fostering talent and enthusiam. Fundamentally, if you want to be there, then they will recognise that and you have access to individuals and resources that can help you build upon that. As a result, you will meet many emlpoyees across the firm who are at the top of their careers and inspire you to attain similar successes in your own career.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects are a massive draw for the firm. Due to the sheer size and multiple locations accross the whole world, tied into the fact that there is nearly any job that you can think of, there is no doubt that I will stay with the firm for many years to come. What this shows to me is that I can develop and work my way up in the firm, building strong connections, rather than leaving and going elsewhere to get a promotion.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a great social scene amongst fellow intern students, although it was not as strong as one would have hoped in the normal setting. This is understandable considering that we never actually got to meet anyone face-to-face. However, the social events laid on by both the recruitment team and graduate committee ensured that there was plenty of opportunity to get to know each other and find out more about our interests and differences. This meant that Igot to know many different people from many different backgrounds to my own.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living and socialising in the area I worked (as I was living close to the office), was excellent. Bournemouth is an excellent place to live and work, with a plethora of things to do. However, it not being London means that the cost of living is actually pretty reasonable and allows for you to live within walking distance of the office and not spending your whole salary of accomodation or travel. I look forward to returning to the same office.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I was not able to experience any nightlife.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a plethora of opportunities laid on during our internship that encouraged socialising and relxaing outside of our work. Though, again, due to the pandemic, not much was happening in the wider firm outside of work. Saying this, we did get the opportunitiy to talk to many of the groups and find out about what they do and put on outside of work. So overall, it seemed like there was a lot to get stuck into outside of work.
