    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in J.P. Morgan. While the format of the internship was changed from a 10 week in person internship to a 5 week virtual internship, HR did a tremendous job in creating a very well structured program. There were lots of events planned, while still allowing time for individual tasks as well as networking. All the events were incredibly insightful and allowed me to gain an understanding about working at J.P. Morgan. One of the highlights of my internship was the speaker series with J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I always felt valued by my colleagues. From day one my colleagues were very welcoming and I was able to reach out to them whenever I needed to. All my colleagues were also willing to share information on their role and their experience working at the firm as well as offer me guidance and advice. I also felt comfortable in sharing my ideas and opinions with my colleagues and for these to be acknowledged and considered.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager did a great job in giving me continued support and guidance throughout the internship. In the first week my manager outlined my tasks and objectives for the internship. My manager would also regularly check on me by having daily meetings and calls in order to review my progress. I also received regular feedback from my manager and members of the team on my tasks, which allowed me to improve my work and resulted in appreciation from my colleagues.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy throughout the duration of my internship. There was a lot of learning and a very steep learning curve. For the majority of the day I would work on my projects and contribute to desk-work. I would also attend morning meetings, teach in sessions, organise networking calls as well as attend firm-wide events such as speaker series and this kept me busy on a daily basis. I would also respond to feedback to improve my work, which was a part of the process.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Responsibility was an important part of the summer internship due to the format being virtual. Therefore, I carefully planned out each day and scheduled in meetings, calls and time for work in order to meet the required deadlines. I also took responsibility to organise virtual coffee chats with colleagues from different teams and divisions. Individually, I was responsible to complete my required tasks to a high standard, organise times to receive feedback as well as schedule time with members of my team to learn more about their work on the desk.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As a finance student, this internship was really important to me as it allowed me to see how theory can be applied to more practical scenarios in financial markets. The markets knowledge and insights I gained also allowed me to develop my commercial awareness skills. I also developed my communication and presentation skills which will help me work more effectively in team environments as well as enable me to excel in group presentations. Finally, the Powerpoint and Excel skills will be important for university work related to analysis as well as my future career in finance.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • While the internship was virtual, the atmosphere throughout my team and the wider firm was very professional. There were many different kinds of meetings. Some meetings were informal with a small number of participants. These meetings were more informal and was where I had the opportunity to contribute more. There was also formal meetings with lots of participants from various regions. These meetings were more formal and consisted of more senior staff who would facilitate discussions. Regardless of the type of meeting, there was a high level of professionalism throughout.

  • The Human Resources team did a fantastic job in meticulously planning the internship so that interns were busy throughout and were able to gain significant knowledge about working at J.P. Morgan. On the first week of the internship, HR explained the schedule for the internship and the timings of each activity. There was also lots of networking sessions with senior staff that was mentioned to us from the beginning of the internship and extra sessions which were also added during the internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • J.P. Morgan's investment heavily invests in its interns and junior talent. At the beginning of the internship, I received numerous trainings on Microsoft Excel, Bloomberg, Powerpoint and many more from various third party companies. I also had the opportunity to learn about concepts, theories and products from colleagues that were situated in America. Feedback was the important way to develop. My manager and team members provided me with constant feedback throughout the internship which enabled me to continuously improve my work and develop.
