    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year with Tech Data. I instantly felt part of the team and valued by everyone. I was able to work on my development through training sessions and regular meetings with management. I was able to get involved in projects that interested me and develop new skills that will be necessary for graduate employment. The team were really friendly and sociable, this made me feel very comfortable right from the start.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I instantly felt part of the team and valued by everyone. People would regularly ask for my opinion and input into projects and tasks which really boosted my confidence. Through an online recognition tool people were able to thank and congratulate you for work you had contributed to or completed, receiving one these was really made you feel valued by colleagues. Colleagues would always be so grateful for any work you helped with, regularly giving this feedback to senior management where you could get a shout out in the team meetings.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given lot's of support and guidance by both my manager, and other managers within the team. There are quarterly development meetings where i was able to discuss what areas i would like to develop or improve and work together with my manager to achieve all of these. All managers were willing to offer guidance on issues work related or not. I regularly asked for guidance on graduate employment and career opportunities and advice.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • 4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After i settled into the business and was comfortable with managing my workload i was given lot's of responsibility. I was able to manage multiple projects at once, assist in other areas of the team and carry out the same work as the full time Executives. I was very happy to take on the extra responsibility as i wanted to develop my skills and gain as much experience as possible during my placement year at Tech Data.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to develop many skills while on placement. I was given the opportunity to attend a Marketing Masterclass run by experts in the field, gaining lot's of valuable knowledge and tips for use in the future. Tech Data runs a variety of training workshops, both in person and virtual, which you can attend during your working day. All the skills learnt on placement now make my degree more relevant, and i am able to use skills such as time management and organisation with my assignments.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was good, considering it was a large office which at the start can seem very daunting, everyone was so friendly and willing to help. There were hot desks so people from other offices were able to come and work for the day, this enabled you to meet people from other offices you otherwise wouldn't have which was good for team dynamics. There is a dress down day on Friday where you were able to wear your own clothes which made for a nice atmosphere.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • In my team the placement students and some of the other colleagues in my team were close. We would go for lunches and drinks every week. We would always celebrate peoples birthdays by going for lunch or drinks and most of the team would join for this. But i think this would vary team by team. I knew a few of the other placements students from around the business through working on projects together but would never go out socially together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived close to the Tech Data offices so i commuted to work and therefore didn't rent. But from my knowledge of the area the cost of living near is fair and fits the salary you have while on placement. The cost of socialising is also very fair with average prices for the south. The business park offers a free bus for employees from the city center near the train station so this can save on travel costs.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is little to no student nightlife in Basingstoke as there are no universities near. Nightlife in Basingstoke is limited as it is not a big city. There are lot's of pubs and bars which are nice to visit, such as Fever and Tonic, however there are not any big clubs in the area. There are lot's of restaurants and nice places to eat out if you are looking for more of a quiet night out.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 3/5
