    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Incredibly enjoyable experience, despite being virtual. We got to interact with employees throughout the hierarchy and really understand the culture at the firm. The managers and project advisor were great at guiding us but still pushing us to think ourselves. They were also incredibly supportive of any personal events that took place. It was not only a great experience to allow us to learn about the firm but also about ourselves. I developed many skills that be beneficial for my future career.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There was a great amount of respect between my colleagues and I as well as between us and our managers. Everyone's input and opinions were encouraged, taken on board and considered. Everyone contributed equally and was more than happy to lend a hand if ever you needed the help. It was a great teamworking environment which encouraged us to put in maximum effort to ensure we ended up with a good quality piece of work at the end.p

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • We we're given a good level of guidance where ever we needed it, whilst still encouraging us to be proactive and put in the work to gain more knowledge. We got feedback on our mock presentation so we could improve our work and make it as best we can.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The internship started off being quite busy at the start with excel training and training for another tool used by J.P. Morgan as well as introductory talks. Throughout the internship we had panels with current grads which were incredibly helpful in terms of advice to succeed in the internship as well as to understand their experiences. As the internship went on there were fewer events as worl for our projects increased and we were required to devote more time to those.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Due to the virtual nature of the internship we were given projects to do rather than join a team and work on ongoing J.P. Morgan projects/ tasks. For this reason, we did not have a lot of responsibilty in terms of delivering work that will go on to clients. However, one of the projects was for a real life charity meaning we had a lot of responsibilty to deliver a piece of work which will be helpful to them.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • One of the main skills I developed was teamworking in a virtual environment. This required being more proactive to put yourself out there in the intial days and get to know your team and build a rapport with them. It also required clear communication as we were not all sat working in the same place. This also meant clear delegation of work was required so as not to duplicate work as waste time. Another crucial skill I developed is time management. We had pretimetabled committments as well as deadlines for our projects to manage.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The environment was great on the internship. Being among other sociable as well as motivated people meant that we had fun and got to know each other well whilst still working hard to deliver the high quality of work that was expected of us. In terms of the environment created by our managers and prohect advisor, there was formality in the traditional sense that they would be assessing us and were senior to us however, they were incredibly friendly and fun to work with at the same time.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was organised incredibly well. There were a great deal of organised events like graduate panels, sessions with the senior most people in the firm and social events for the internship cohort as well. It really felt like the recruitment team had put in a huge amount of effort to run everything so smoothly with such a large group of interns globally. Not only were there a lot of sessions but they were all incredibly interesting and helpful.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had multiple training sessions to get to grips with any software that we were required to use, which I can definitely use in the future. As well as this, we had personal development sessions like building our personal brand, effective comminication and leadership skills which are all transferrable skills that will be required, and i can use in the future. The events were very interactive and engaging which made the sessions very enjoyable as well as being useful.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am incredibly thrilled to have been asked to go back next year as despite being virtual, the internship was an incredibly enjoyable experience. Regardless of their position within the firm, everyone I spoke to seemed happy to take their valuable time out to talk to us interns and make us feel welcome and supported during out time at the firm. Many employees have been working there for over a decade which speaks for the experience of working at J.P. Morgan.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The current grads put a lot of effort into organising social events for the cohort every week. They created a very informal and relaxed environment for us to unwind at the end of the week and spend some time being social with out fellow interns. They came up with some vert innovative games to really break the ice between us and encourage us to have a bit of fun. It was a great opportunity to build a rapport with our fellow interns.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As the internship was virtual we did not inccur any costs of travelling to the workplace, or going out for a meal to socialise or things like that.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As we were home due to the pandemic, we did not have the opportunity to experience thsi aspect of the experience.p

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Although we couldn't experience these due to the pandemic and the internship being virtual, we got a good insight into what the opportunities for this are through the gead panels and other similar sessions. J.P. Morgan have various Coporate Social Responsibility (CSR) opportunities to allow and encourage you to give back to the community. As well as this, there a business resource groups such as Women On The Move that employees can join to make a change and become a part of a community.
