    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed the supportive and friendly culture! Although I wasnt able to attend the internship physically at Bournemouth, but the HR, managers and people in JPM really make interns feel very welcomed. Despite not being able to work on real projects, the case studies given provided the opportunity for interns to network, interview people and really understand what CADP entails. Every intern around me was driven and friendly, supporting each other without too much competition.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Generally, it was very easy to schedule coffee chat with people. They really invest time in people to teach me and answer my questions. After a networking event, interns will usually schedule meeting with the panels. It would be useful for the whole intern group when an intern organised a group networking with that person. That would benefit every intern and save the employees' time. People always say yes to coffee chat and encourage collaboration. bThe collaborative culture is very prominent to make sure people learn from each other.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager had 1:1 meeting with me every week to analyse my performance and provide constructive feedback on my work. My project advisor had daily group meeting with my group and is easily reachable whenever my group has questions. They are very friendly and understand that interns just started their career and might have different insecurities. They acknowledge our strengths and weaknesses , essentially to help us improve as an individual and as a group.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to virtual setting, I could access my work any time I want. Generally, I spend my day time networking with people to learn more about their jobs. At night / in the evening, I would work on my projects. It was quite intense for me but that really depends on how much work you want to put in. Most important tips is to balance your networking and delivering work within the deadline, while ensuring excellence.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I cant really say for sure because it was not a Business As Usual work, but a case study. What I heard was that graduates were given real responsibility since the start but managers will be giving feedback and guide them to the right direction. However, need to bear in mind that it is a large organisation and there is a certain way of doing things. Although there is flat hierarchy , there are still procedure to folllow.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have definitely learnt how to present with confidence, and learnt how to assess audience. Collaborating with people from diverse background is very important because JPM is really diverse and they are trying to reach gender equality and promote cultural difference. (although Bournemouth is not as diverse as London due to the nature of the job). I also learnt how to interviewed people by asking the right questions to ensure the project is going in the right direction.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The culture was very friendly and collaborative. People are easily reached through email and Lync. Due to virtual setting, I could not really gauge the atmosphere in the office. I was mainly exposed to people in Bournemouth (Operations and Technology). I did get to network with few people in London and Edinburgh, based on my interaction, people are really helpful. The culture in JPM is standardised in every where in the world. They also emphasised on asking questions.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The HR put in a lot of effort to organised many networking events despite being virtual. It was very organised in the sense that our calendar will be updated constantly and HR will answer our queries in the intern group chat. Even when I faced technical difficulties, the tech team was easily accessible and there is AI chat bot to help. The whole set up made me feel comfortable and less anxious about not being able to deliver my work on time.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • JP Morgan definitely placed a lot of emphasis on human training and development through intellectually challenging projects and a lot of online courses. They encourage everyone to be more technology-savvy by attending online courses. There are many communities that have technology experts who can help to answer questions if people have questions. CADP is getting more data-driven. There are many projects about automation of manual process so Tableau,Alteryx and Qlik view are good skills to know.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • CADP graduate programme has data analytics, project management, and process improvement. I think it is a good career launch pad if you do not know what to do in the future. Due to the rotational nature, you get to experience different things to find out what you like or dislike, understand your strengths and weaknesses. The exit opportunities were really great based on what I hear. JP Morgan definitely encourage growth and development regardless where you go.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there were many networking events and you get to meet many different teams. Due to virtual environment, I did not get to meet front office or other department. However, it was down to your initiative to get to know other departments and understand the firm. Bournemouth is more laid back. There are volunteering events or competitions that encourage people from different teams to collaborate eg, coding competition, charity work. The internal network such as Women on the Move and PRIDE organised many activities.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was supposed to go to Bournemouth office but did not manage to because of COVID-19. It is definitely cheaper than London. The rent, food, and basic necessities are cheaper but the salaries are lower as well. The salary for CADP is not as high as expected but it is sufficient if budget is managed well. London salary is not much different from Bournemouth so when it comes to choosing location, you need to be aware of that.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I did not get to experience the night life due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, I heard that there are a few bars in Bournemouth. Although it is not as exciting as London, but I think companies organised a lot of networking events for employees to network and people live close to each other because bournemouth is so small. Nightlife is definitely not my concern because networking opportunities is everywhere in JPM. Bournemouth is very near to London (2 hours)

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there are charity works, volunteering, coding competition, tree planting. There are bee hives, gardens, plantations in Bournemouth campus because it is a very green-friendly place. There is solar panel at the car park and they encourage people to cycle to the office. Manager definitely encourages us to enjoy activities outside of work to stretch our capabilities especially in terms of leadership development. For example, as an associate, you can join to be the project advisor of intern
