    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • As a technology intern, I was involved in a wide range of projects including projects that extended outside my team. I was involved in challenging and diverse work, in areas such as software engineering, testing, performance analysis and data science. These projects pushed me outside my comfort zone and allowed me to learn a lot in a short span of time (~5 weeks).

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • M&G has an extraordinarily inclusive culture that fosters collaboration and growth, regardless of prior experiences or position in the company. As an intern, I was made to feel valued very early on by everyone in my team and the wider technology teams, by inviting me to events, taking on high-impact projects and asking for me for advice during projects.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Opportunities for growth and development were plenty. The buddy system was useful for support during the internship program.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The balance was good for a majority of the internship, with the scales tipping toward the end of the internship in terms of project workload. However, there were engaging activities and learning projects throughout the internship, which prevented any dull moments. There are a wide number of company initiatives, lunch and learn calls, coffee chats that were scheduled so kept me busy everyday with a good variety. There is no overtime culture. Work was intense but certainly manageable.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A good level of responsibility, including taking charge of an personal project that had impact. My team entrusted me with trying to do things by myself even if I fail.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned invaluable skills in software development and data analytics, including python and javascript. As a whole, I felt far more aware of the technology industry and how technology is used within investment management. The internship was not very demanding in terms of work, so I did not pick up a great amount of hard skills but I believe that the soft skills and technology accumen was more important for the short span of 5 weeks.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Although the internship was held remotely, the atmosphere was relaxed, encouraging and constructive. People are friendly and always willing to share their experiences with you.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Considering that the internship was set up virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it surpassed my expectations. There was a wide variety of career-focused, personal development and social events that kept the interns engaged throughout.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Training and development was important but mainly provided in the form of second hand resources. Pair programming exercises and collaborative working certainly trained my skills in development and the various workshops in investment management led me to have a robust understanding of the industry and how M&G operates within financial services.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Due to the virtual nature of the internship, the socials were relatively sparse but enjoyable. The professional networking events were socially inclined and a good break from the work during the week.
