    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Despite it being a virtual insight scheme, I found the experience to be very interesting. I developed a high level knowledge of how the different aspects of IB fit and work together. It was also very exciting to see how JP Morgan valued sustainable investing and ESG and is continuing to pursue the cause. Moreover, it was nice to connect to other attendees virtually and build a network of students who can help each other when we apply for internships etc.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • As it was an online experience I understand that it was perhaps more difficult to engage with everyone. In my group there were no one to one or small group networking. I think it would have helped to take away the feeling of isolation and it would have made the experience more personable and I would have felt more valued. However when I submitted questions to the hosts, there were times where they were answered.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • During the learning calls, the host was always engaging and willing to answer any questions. Also they made sure that the majority of us understood the concepts he was teaching and was willing to go over topics for those to understand better. However as it was online and virtual I felt it lacked a personable feeling. Although there was the opportunity to ask questions due to the large number of participants not all questions could get answered. Having said this, the HR team was willing to answer and queries or technical issues at hand.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed a high level knowledge of how the different aspects of IB fit and work together. I was also introduced to other departments such as wealth management and risk. these were careers that I hadn't considered before but after hearing about peoples experience it motivated me to learn more about the profession. In turns of assisting my degree studies, unfortunately I can not say that it contributed much to what I had been learning about in lectures but it did contribute to personal development.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • It was well planned and structured as there was a programme timetable released prior for us to understand what we would be doing that day. Also there was a booklet was sent to us via email and at the end it contained information of the global insight week attendees. This had helped us to identify each other so that we could connect through LinkedIn and get acquainted with each other before the start of the programme.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Personally I remember feeling very excited to start and to meet the people I had connected with via LinkedIn. During the learning calls, the host was always engaging and willing to answer any questions. Also they made sure that the majority of us understood the concepts he was teaching and was willing to go over topics for those to understand better. The questions and Answer calls were also very insightful and the employees during the call were all very willing to answer questions.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As it was an online experience I could not network face to face with current employees. This meant that I could not shadow their work or ask direct questions in relation to their personal experiences. However as I understand it, had the insight scheme happened in it's original format, the HR team had booked accommodation and travel passes for us all to use. There were also evening networking sessions planned so that we could we meet and relax in the evening.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I think the insight scheme was a great way to incur some insight into different roles. There was a lot of emphasis on that the fact that JP Morgan hires from all disciplines and that teams were very diverse in nature by in gender and ethnicity. However as we could not shadow the work, it was difficult to get a wider picture of the full nature of the different roles both the good and the bad.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • It was extremely helpful in understanding the company culture. The questions and answers session really emphasised that the hierarchy in the teams were flat so people were encourage to ask questions and not feel inferior. I also loved the emphasis on sustainable investing and ESG and how JP Morgan are starting to recognise the importance and using the frameworks in their analysis but also recommending the approach to their clients, especially to more senior ones.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It was extremely helpful in understanding what I would like to do after graduation. It has opened my eyes to more careers paths and I would like to apply for a role in either wealth or asset management due to the slower pace of the role ( in comparison to the faced paced nature of Sales and Trading). I am confident I can build on the knowledge that I had acquired from the experience and use it as starting point to develop.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Initially when the insight scheme was still in its original format, the accommodation and travel expenses had already been paid for by the HR team. Even when the insight scheme was moved online, we did not have to pay back the expenses. In terms of payment or wages, we did not receive one as it was only an insight week and not a paid role. We were paid in knowledge and the opportunity to meet albeit virtually the hosts.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • As we could not shadow the work, it was difficult to get a wider picture of the full nature of the different roles both the good and the bad. Therefore even during the question and answer session we could not personally ask ad we had to submit the questions. Due to the number of participants it was difficult to make sure everybody who submitted a question had theirs answered. It would have been nice to have some networking sessions arranged.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • As we could not shadow the work, it was difficult to get a wider picture of the full nature of the different roles both the good and the bad. Therefore even during the question and answer session we could not personally ask ad we had to submit the questions. Due to the number of participants it was difficult to make sure everybody who submitted a question had theirs answered. It would have been nice to have some networking sessions arranged.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Even during the question and answer session we could not personally ask ad we had to submit the questions. Due to the number of participants it was difficult to make sure everybody who submitted a question had theirs answered. As a result it was difficult to find out what JP Morgan employees did outside of work. It would have been nice to have some networking sessions arranged so that we could ask more personable questions.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would definitely recommend this experience to a friend as even though it was online I still learnt a lot and it was a worthwhile week. Maybe when Covid improves, the attendees for next year will be able to have their experience in office where they ill be able to get a more holistic view of the different roles and ask more questions. Also meeting other attendees and building your personal network is definitely worthwhile.
