    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was a very enjoyable experience in that there was a perfect balance of challenges and other activities such as networking and independent learning. The resources provided in the programme were incredible, with a range of external training workshops and online independent learning portals. I made many meaningful connections with both fellow interns who I have kept in touch with, as well as current employees who I am looking forward to reconnect with once I join the graduate programme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Despite not coming from a Tech background in my academic career, my colleagues in the technology division valued my opinions and insights when working on projects. Both fellow interns as well as DB employees spent time explaining challenging concepts to me through video-calls and pair-programming, which made me feel valued and significantly boosted my confidence. Both my mentor and senior mentor emphasised how important graduates are to the company, which was also encouraging to hear.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • All of my mentors, managers and supervisors were very supportive and understanding of any questions, technical issues and project preparation that I had. I was especially pleased with the balance between the level of independence that I was given to make my own progress, and the tips and advice that I received from them. Their presence made me feel very welcome whilst interning with DB, which provided me with a great impression of the company culture.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The intern schedule was packed every day with a broad range of tasks and activities. These were balanced very well in terms of variety of information, length and levels of interaction. I very much enjoyed engaging in challenging workshops for the majority of the day, as well as having spare time for independent learning and networking. I am impressed with the way this was organised considering the changes that had to be made to the programme in order for it to be delivered virtually.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Due to the nature of the online internship and the subsequent safety requirements on company data etc., I believe we were given a little less responsibility as interns in terms of being able to work on real-life projects alongside other DB employees. However, with regards to our own scheduling and timetables, we were given a great amount of independence in terms of getting in touch with DB employees to schedule calls in order to collect research for our projects.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In terms of soft skills such as self-esteem, presenting to experts/professionals and working in teams, the internship provided a range of workshops and tasks which were invaluable to any type of learning, which I'll be able to use for the rest of my life. With regards to technical skills, my degree background is completely different so it was great to learn so many new things which I can look back on and develop further in my own time!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • N/A - I completed a virtual internship.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was very impressed with the organisation of the internship considering the circumstances of covid-19 and the sudden changes that had to be made in such a short space of time. Despite these inconveniences, our schedules were packed each day for the full 4 weeks - and very well balanced in terms of activity type and length. The HR team were always happy to help with any technical issues that we were experienced, and we were able to learn so much throughout the experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In terms of soft skills, the company invested in many resources to train Db interns on a personal level such as workshops to improve self-esteem, presentation skills and how to sell yourself in the most effective way. With regards to technical skills, there was also a lot of training provided in the internship programme. This was provided by external workshops and ranged from Foundation Finance Knowledge sessions to Divisional Technical Skills Training. All workshops were so informative and invaluable to my overall growth and learning.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After my one-month virtual experience working for DB as an intern, I am very excited to begin my full-time career with the company. I see myself working at DB for for a long time, especially considering the variety of projects and opportunities that the company has to offer. I feel that everyone is valued regardless of number of years at the company or past experience, and this is something very attractive to me, since there is always something new to learn.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes - despite the internship being virtual, there were a number of lunch sessions provided to get further involved with the company such as through mental health talks and fun networking sessions. We were provided with an insight into what activities we can get involved in once we start at DB. At the end of the internship, we were invited to an external activity on Zoom where we could meet other interns from different divisions by working on an online challenge.
