    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a qualitative internship with some real beneficial work experience. The employees were really friendly and was able to ensure that I maximised the opportunities I could grab during my internship. Even though it was conducted through a virtual environment it was handled very well and run smoothly. The intern events were especially beneficial with plenty of webinars with senior management across the world and fun social events to interact with the other interns across divisions and offices across the world. The volunteering aspect was also really fun and a great way to bond with the other interns whilst giving back to the community.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues and team were very friendly and I settled in almost immediately. They helped me maximise my opportunities connecting with others in the firm and helped me expand my knowledge base in the role I was placed in. Along with expanding my knowledge, my team also helped me develop my workplace skills by allowing me to send out emails after I had completed tasks to the relevant risk leads as well as setting tasks that would challenge and develop my excel skills

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given the upmost support during my time at Morgan Stanley. My supervisors were very friendly and approachable. They equipped me with all the knowledge and tools I needed to ensure I completed my tasks correctly. If I was ever stuck or struggling I had no problem reaching out and asking questions to my supervisors to ensure that tasks were completed correctly first time and to ensure I kept learning and widening my knowledge base.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work load I was given was a perfect balance between meetings and enough time to complete my daily tasks. The internship programme from Morgan Stanley was perfectly structured including intern meetings allowing us to learn more about the company as a whole, the opportunity to observe different team meetings relevant to my role, and independent tasks that I was responsible for. We were also encouraged not to work late so we had time to wind down in the evening and come back refreshed for the next working day to give it our all again.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Many tasks I was set were given with minimal supervision after I had been shown what to do. I also had tasks that were collaborative tasks that had individual elements that we worked on and fed back to the team. It was the perfect balance of working independently and team working. I was presented with many opportunities to speak at team meetings and present to the head of the division on my final intern presentation describing my role and what I had learned during my time at Morgan Stanley

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The experience I have received is benefiting me in my studies as I can now match theories I learn with practical scenarios that I have worked through. It has also helped me improve my professional correspondence via email and my excel skills for coursework set. It has also enabled me to have a clearer direction in what I want my career to look like after I graduate and the opportunities that are now available to me because of the experience I have gained from my time at Morgan Stanley

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Even though it was conducted in a virtual environment due to the global pandemic, the team spirit and friendly environment was apparent in every conversation. The culture at Morgan Stanley really helps bring this through and creates this environment. I can imagine if we were in the office it would be an even friendlier atmosphere than I experienced over the virtual internship. This really sets Morgan Stanley apart from all the previous offices and companies I have had work experience at.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was set up with minimal technical hiccups. All the zoom sessions were run professionally with links being sent out in a couple of days advance so that we could prepare and organise our days to ensure we could attend the intern session as well as complete our tasks required for the day. We were kept well informed about the situation prior to starting our internship as well as during our internship about the sessions we were required to attend.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Morgan Stanley are dedicated to investing in young people. We were given access to training materials prior to starting our internship as well as training during our induction week. As well as training from our managers required to complete our roles we were also giving continuous professional development we were required to complete before a given deadline. Morgan Stanley want to ensure that young people are equipped with all the information and tools possible to help advance them on in their career

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Morgan Stanley are so keen on investing in their young people I was glad to be offered a return internship after I had completed my third year at university with them. They are committed to holding on to young talent and help them as much as they can so that they can advance their career. By offering a return internship it makes the company very appealing in my eyes to come back again as a Graduate if offered the job after my return internship. It offers security to students throughout their time at university.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many committees and opportunities to socialise within work whilst giving back to the community and meeting up with likeminded co-workers. I myself was involved in setting up Q&A zoom calls with senior management within Morgan Stanley so that staff get the opportunity to engage and converse with those higher up in the firm. It was also a great way to socialise with other employees from different teams I wouldn’t have known otherwise in my role
