    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was extremely enjoyable. I received real experience and had many responsibilities. My teams were really enthusiastic and I was able to learn a lot. I gained one years experience for my APC and was able to attend numerous CPD and training sessions. I was able to meet lots of different people in many other departments as well as in my own department. There were also many social events put on by the company which were really enjoyable. I never felt bored or overwhelmed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues relied on my work to be of an excellent standard and because of this I felt extremely valued. Each team member would always listen to my opinion and my questions. Team members were extremely generous with their time to show me the ropes and answer any queries or questions I had. In team meetings I felt I could speak up and express my opinion because my team members valued it. I felt extremely valued by my colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisors [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] were exceptional. They have given me so much support and guidance throughout the placement. They would answer any questions I had almost instantly and would always make sure I was comfortable with the work I was being set. If at any time I did not feel completely 100% about a task or how I was feeling I felt I could tell them straight away and they would be able to assist and help me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In the beginning of my placement I was a lot less busy than towards the end of my placement but much of my work would take me quite a long time to complete. If at any point I had no work to complete I knew I could ask anyone in my department for more work. By the end of my placement I felt very busy but I was faster at the work and I would finish it within my working day. Therefore on average I would say I had a perfect balance.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had a fair amount of responsibility. Especially to the end I had a lot more than in the beginning - this was because I had earn’t it with the good work I had been producing. Unfortunately some of the tasks I would have liked to have been responsible for fell through with the lockdown of COVID-19. Despite this I was still responsible for managing a business park and numerous reporting and projects. I feel I was responsible for a fair amount but nothing out of my depth.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have, no doubt about it, gained skills for life this placement year. Not only do I feel extremely knowledgeable in my department - property management, but I have also developed other skills such as: organisation, time management, business acumen, etc. All of these skills will be invaluable when completing my final year at university and applying for grad jobs. Putting what I have been studying into practice has been an amazing experience and I have gained so much from it.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was really balanced. People got on with their work but were also allowed to have quick catch ups and a bit of banter at times. Getting into the office in the morning was always nice and enjoyable. Everyone was friendly but knew they were there to work. As Savills put on many social events you got to know your colleagues well. It was very fun and even in lockdown it was still enjoyable due to certain team members efforts and team meetings and socials.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation was impeccable. I knew exactly what I was doing at any given moment of the placement. We were given the training we needed and the HR team were especially fantastic at organising APC training, CPD and social events. In our two day induction we had numerous talks and activities which gave helpful tips and training to set us up for the year. I knew exactly what I was doing and where I was meant to be because of the organisation.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Savills invest a very high amount of personal training and development to their grads and placement students. They put on regular “lunch and learns” which is essentially CPD in your lunch hour. We attended a lot of training throughout the year. Any extra training I requested I was allowed to do. As a company, I think they know how important good training is and they allow time in your day for this. I have been to numerous talks after work at Savills which were excellent also.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Although I feel I did an excellent job and my team members have expressed they would like to have me back I have no idea if I will get onto the grad scheme or not. None of the placement students from the previous year got onto the grad scheme. I will try my hardest but I think it is more dependent on your grad scheme application, assessment centre and interview rather than work done on your placement year.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was really good. All the placement students and grads got on really well together. Our social event during our induction really helped break the ice at the beginning and you got to meet many fellow placement students and grads. The social scene with colleagues was also very good. The company put on many social events including mini golf, summer games, numerous Christmas parties and pub quizzes to name a few. Obviously many were cancelled during lockdown also.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Expensive. The cost of living in London is so high and the placement did pay well but it was still tight. Pints were around £5.50 and rent including bills was £675 a month. Travel was around £100 a month. Having said this, it was all manageable and I never had to say no to a social event but it was still a bit of a shock to the system as I had never lived in London before.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Amazing. London is such a vibrant city, there is something for everyone. Soho was around the corner from the west end office so we often went drinking there after work. I loved going out in Shoreditch, Clapham and Chelsea also. It’s such a happening place that you will never get bored or feel you wouldn’t know where to go out. My only regret is not going to more clubs on the weekends as I couldn’t during lockdown and after etc.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were loads of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. As I said in the answer to the previous question, London has so many different things to do and be a part of. I personally didn’t do many activities outside of work but this wasn’t because they weren’t available.
