    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was a very enjoyable experience. The people that I met were friendly and included me in the team with ease. The work was challenging and completing it gave me a feeling of accomplishment. The internship was a great learning experience, I improved my technical skills and got to learn more about the business. The talks and webinars that were set up for the interns were also very interesting and made me understand the culture of the firm better.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues throughout the internship. I had daily meetings with my manager where we discussed my progress and we decided what should be done next. In those meetings I also received feedback on my work and encouragements. In team meetings I had the chance to present my work and the audience was engaged and asked questions and offered me feedback. Being told that my product will help the team at the end of the internship was also very rewarding.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager helped me with many things for my project. Everything from the development setup to the design choices that I made in my project was discussed with my manager. He also helped me understand the firm's systems and gave me resources where the systems that I had to use were presented. I also received help from other team members that showed me resources to complete my project and offered advice on how to improve it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My days were quite busy. The days usually consisted of 2-3 meetings and the rest being work on the project. As my project was very important for the team and the duration of the internship was reduced, I allocated a lot of time to work on it everyday. I enjoyed the volume of work that I had to do and believe that I improved my abilities because of it. I did not feel overwhelmed by the work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was encouraged to come up with ideas and suggestions but all the work was discussed with my manager. I liked the fact that I didn't have all the responsibility and that I could rely on someone with a lot of experience for guidance. The fact that I talked with my manager so much was a good way to learn new development methodologies and improve my technical skills. Overall, I think I had a good balance in terms of responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills are very helpful. I learned how to use Git, the Eclipse IDE and general software design principles. These are all skills that I will keep for the rest of my career and that I consider to be very useful. I also learned Angular, which I also consider to be a great addition to my developer toolkit. All this was possible thanks to my team who helped me understand these concepts and showed me examples of their use.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great, everybody was very friendly and happy to talk to me. I met many great people that took time of their busy days to talk to me and offer me advice on my career. I enjoyed the events that I took part in and I believe that everyone made an effort for the interns to feel good and create a positive environment. There were fun activities as well, a virtual escape room being one of the best events.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well organised, the work that I had to do was clear from the first day and all the setup was planed and I was supported with everything. The events were also planed well and we had all the details in advance. Everything was very well organised and I think the organizers did a good job scheduling all the activities in a way that kept the interns engaged, but still offered time to work on the project.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm offered me access to online learning platforms that allowed me to expand my technical skills. Besides those, I also had the opportunity to ask questions about anything to my team members and other employees. I also received financial training prior to joining. I found it very useful and quite interesting. I also received Agile training that was very useful and helped me apply the principle in the team. The training offered was good.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was looking forward to coming back to the firm, but unfortunately I did not get an offer. I think future employment opportunities look very good and that the firm invests a lot in their employees. After joining there is a program that runs over 15 weeks that teaches the employees the tech skills that they need to succeed in the job. That was one of the things that I was excited to participate in.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The group of interns was very good. I had weekly meetings with other interns where we discussed our progress and exchanged opinions about the internship. We also had events outside of working hours were we got to know each other and have some fun. The group of interns was also very helpful as it represented a way to receive information about the firm's systems and solve common issues. The events that encouraged us to meet also led to the creation of new friendships.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities to get involved in many activities from fundraisers to marathons and many other things. The firm's value of "Giving Back" is very important and many employees participate to such events. We were introduced with one such opportunity in the form of mapping villages in India using an online platform. The activity took place in teams and represented a perfect way to do something good and meet new interns from other divisions which was fun.
