The Industrial Placement Year at RWEST is a great opportunity for a student to develop as a professional. As a Placement Student, I was given increasing responsibilities and involvement, the chance to visit other offices, shadow different desks, and enjoy an open and collaborative culture.
I was never treated as an "intern", rather, I was considered and talked to as a full-time employee. In this context, my input during meetings and daily activities was welcomed and sought after.
Monthly face-to-face meetings with my line manager ensured every issue, challenge, and success were appropriately identified and addressed.
In addition to daily tasks, I was allowed to shadow different desks, deliver presentations, undertake small projects, join meetings, and train new team members. This ensured the routine varied and days were busy.
Although I joined the company as an Industrial Placement Student, I acted as a full-time Analyst from the beginning. Accordingly, I was responsible for carrying out daily tasks in an accurate and timely way. The more proficient I became with processes and tasks, the more I was given the opportunity to widen the scope of my responsibilities.
Not only did I develop interpersonal and transferable skills essential to succeed during my final year at University and in a Graduate Role, but I gained an in-depth knowledge of commodity trading, an exciting industry I am keen to join.
A welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where hard-work, focus, and performance are expected. Everyone is nice and welcoming, birthdays are celebrated, and there is a sense of community.
The placement started with an induction organised by HR followed by two development sessions (one after 6 months and one at the end of the placement) where placement students were trained on delivering presentations, receiving & giving feedback, and were offered CV & Cover Letter clinics. In addition, I set monthly targets with my Line Manager and reviewed progress regularly.
The company offers a multitude of on-site and virtual training sessions. Placement Students are encouraged to join training and development sessions that enhance both skills and knowledge of the company/industry.

Yes. The office is modern and spacious and offers opportunities to socialise during lunch / after work (e.g. table tennis, gym, pool table).
Cost of living and socialising in Swindon is below average. Monthly rent is cheaper than cities with Universities. In addition, RWE Supply & Trading provides a good salary.
Although Swindon is less vibrant than bigger cities, there are some pubs and clubs where placement students can have some fun. Also, there is a handful of good international restaurants worth trying.
There are football matches organised by employees, a running club, and gym classes. People can easily get involved in different activities depending on their interests.
